I'm always skeptical of people saying popular hentai artists are female. Only one I know for sure are the ones who became mangaka, the ones who have very definitely stated in an author page or post-credit "Yes, I'm female", or if their twitter/social media/whatever the fuck doujin circles use have photos of themselves. Its a classic rule of "pics or it didn't happen". The otaku market anime and manga is flooded with is way to saturated to believe some random retard on the internet claiming Asanagi is female or something.

Keep in mind that a lot of eromangaka play with the idea of being female in the same sense as /a/ is filled with little girls.

Judging by the art, you can easily tell which artists are likely to be female and which aren't.
>>
>>135542131
This.

Not to mention that some also have fake pics, e.g. DaHootch posting a picture of "herself" for April Fools a few years ago.

>>
>>135542131
I don't really care if it's true or not, I just want to believe because it somehow makes the fap better.

Reading some good ol' Yuzuki N while thinking the artist is female and probably drawing out her own private, sick fantasies while self-inserting into the heroine makes it so, so much better.
>>
>>135542576
>I just want to believe because it somehow makes the fap better.

It's incredibly easy to tell by just the art style. Women also are a massive fan of the "endless black hole" style of pupil. The first one is really obviously male drawn.
>>
>>135562102
There totally is. Men seem to emulate and get inspired by the works of men and women tend to get inspired and emulate the works of women. There are two completely different baseline art styles going on between male and female, and if you gave somebody who read a lot of manga any page from a random one they could likely tell you the sex of the artist. Or at least, any page with a focus on a character.

Women don't hate rape nearly as much as we're led to believe, hell most of them even like it if it's a good looking man.The only reaosn why women pretend to hate rape is because they know their cunts is the only thing that gives them any value to society so they use it to gain leverage over men.
Rape is only sex it makes absolutely zero sense for women to hate sex unless all women naturally hate men and they only love them as providers.

There's some genre conventions the opposite sex (for their works demographic) sometimes tries to go against (or conform to, IE adding sparkles and bubbles to shoujo, even as a male author simply because it's an established convention). But the art or story alone isn't enough to indicate authors sex.

Best indicators might be when dealing with issues related to that sec only, but that can easily be overcome with research or just asking people.

She's also the character designer of Ace Attorney, at least the first one, Viewtiful Joe and maybe other video games too. And let's not talk about the many yaoi manga and doujinshi she drew. I thought that since she did a bunch of things she could have been well-known but this doesn't seem to be the case.

good use of a logical fallacy of finding the the exceptions or outlyers. Each gender does have a roughly consistent style due to what area of drawing they are in, shoujo, bishi, shounen... that is why this generalization exists in the first place.

Nobody want to read a comic with Tumblr tier art, fanfic tier writing, and themes of equality, no h8, acceptance for all genders, etc cetera., stuffed down our throats in every panel.

If Westener female artistis discard that mentality, then perhaps some decent female artists can come out of the slumbs of this "grrrl power/feminist" movement their going through.

Let me fill you in on something.

The amount of manga which gets scanned or translated only scratches the surface of a MASSIVE pool of content which is created in japan.
Japan practically prints more pages of manga than they produce toilet paper.
There are tons, TONS of female mangaka, most of the draw manga which is targeted to women, and women are a strong consumer force in the manga scene as well, a lot of Shonen manga have primarily female fan bases due to all the attractive male characters.
There are magazines which feature all female artists, there are publishing companies which cater to female artists, its a big deal to say the least.
But these are just female mangaka whom outwardly show their femininity, many choose to hide behind a pen name, which could indicate that the number of female mangaka is larger. Many Yoai/Bara mangaka are women, but also many hetero hentai mangaka are also women, some even doing loli manga (pic related was made by a popular female artist)

In japan, at least in the consumer world of japan, all genders are equally pandered to, and money rules above all else, if someone likes something, you can make money off it, regardless of who you are, what the subject is or who the consumer happens to be.

You have to understand though that the perceivable spectrum of manga which westerners see is a TINY portion of the manga on the market, and sadly tons of manga which is targeted to women just doesnt get scanned or translated which makes the content seem scaled more towards the male demographic, when in reality that isnt the case.

Comics in America are almost nothing but capeshit trash. No wonder the average female artist wants nothing to do with them.
>>
>>135586602
Comics are also utterly bereft of any creative dignity or recognition beyond the insular, incestuous subculture that keeps the industry alive.

Manga have the benefit of being a mainstream medium with a very broad and almost universal readership, whereas comics are pretty much exclusively bought and read by the western equivalent to otaku. Nobody goes into their adulthood and seeks a career where they do nothing but pander exclusively to the sweaty manchildren that the rest of society tries very hard to pretend doesn't exist.
>>
>>135585070
Indeed.
http://facweb.cdm.depaul.edu/noriko/JapanTrip08/JETRO-market_info_manga.pdf
>Manga makes up approximately 20% of magazine sales and approximately 27% of book sales in Japan, and has become a genre that supports the Japanese publishing industry.

http://comicsalliance.com/why-dont-we-talk-about-manga/
>Another problem that manga and comics share is being defined publicly by a single genre. While comics have always been incredibly diverse, the common perception is that all American comics are about superheroes and all manga is shonen (boys’) manga about endless power-ups, yelling and punching. Despite this perception, a wide variety of manga often make the New York Times bestseller list.
>“I also suspect,” Aoki says, “that some of the resistance to manga is the … fact that manga and anime fandom is perceived to skew toward female fans/creators/buyers. That’s not exactly wrong — manga readers are pretty much 50/50 male/female, if not 40/60 male/female sometimes. This is no accident. Manga has a lot of great stories that appeal to female readers, and not just the ‘girly stuff’.”
>>
>>135586707
That must be a factor of why webcomics aren't as popular in Japan right? Those with enough talent can potentially become mangaka while in America it seems more difficult to draw what you want unless you go full indie.
>>
>>135586857
There also aren't as many comic publishers in the states. Japan has countless publications ranging in size and renown and demographics and has things like weekly/monthly magazine serializations and whatnot.

In America, there's basically a handful of very, very large publishers that publish everything in one format and for one audience. Marvel and DC are the american equivalent to SJ and they're similar in that their approach is to design by committee and have their own editorial and writing staff handle the creative side of franchise management while the artist gets no creative control beyond drawing it. If it doesn't have the potential to become the next hollywood blockbuster movie adaptation, they want no part in it.

The U.S. is very sexist. Comics were considered and marketed as 'boys only' up until manga came and a shitton of women were reading/buying it.

Now they are trying to grab onto a more diverse market since catering to solely white males is proving to be not as profitable. Problem is that the people in charge are still producing the same shit, because they won't hire different types of editors.
>>
>>135585226
Yeah, but the difference is that it's not the majority of manga, just a few. The problem is that most American comics are so fucking edgy. Don't you think it's a coincidence that anything remotely 'dark' and 'violent,' or noir, is so fucking popular in the states? It's annoying. Even as much as I love J.H.'s art the over saturation of that genre is annoying. I haven't read Sandman for that reason either.

Unfortunately the fact is that it can take a good part of a generation to change an entrenched industry that's stuck in a local minima, sometimes you just plain have to wait for the old guard to literally die out (or at least retire). Plus there's the issue of globalization and local specialties that make it even harder at this point. In the 70s, 80s and even early 90s if westerners wanted to read a larger variety of stuff local was the only major choice, and in turn there was a captive market. If the industry had chosen to be more innovative at that point there would have been more room to grow and start small and work their way up. Now though anyone who wants more variety can just plain go get it from Japan, so rather then starting from zero comics have to deal with a very experienced, diverse and mature concentrated industry elsewhere. It's the same basic economics you see play out in other fields, like the USA in a lot of software dev. Despite the market outside the USA long since becoming gigantic and critical and despite the best efforts of lots of other countries American firms simply have a much deeper well of experience and structures to draw on.

>Bill Waterson
Looking back it's actually pretty amazing what that one, single artist accomplished in the newspaper comic industry, he singlehandedly forced a lot of good practices that helped stave off its total decay by possibly decades. I got all his books back in the day and it was really interesting to read about his behind the scenes fights against the shitty standards of the medium, how he started to insist on not having his stuff fucked with which gave him way more creative room.

I respect him a ton not just for what he did, but what he DIDN'T: he decided not to do the standard big cash in by making TV or movies or tons of merchandise or whatever, nor to just keep the thing going as a zombie forever once he decided it was done. That's one of the real keys to the manga/anime industry, that they're constant FINISHING stuff and moving on. The gigantic multiyear epic franchises are a tiny minority, so even when lots of it is inevitably crap it doesn't stick around, what works gets used and what doesn't fades away. Creative destruction, as opposed to the complete allergy to new IPs that is so common here.

Yeah, a crazy amount really. Given how insanely popular C&H was and how it definitely could have been adapted in a number of ways I wouldn't be surprised if the merchandising, TV, and movie rights could have been easily worth $10-20 million or more to him alone. A lot of people like to talk about "artistic integrity" but they aren't generally having putting that kind of number of number on it. It's pretty easy to start rationalizing at that point with non-money arguments even. To take a stand like that and stick to it is pretty impressive whatever side you fall on.

Yeah, and I certainly didn't mean to suggest either that zombie series don't happen with manga, obviously there are a few, or that long running series are always bad. There are a few epics in the Classic sense that have managed to at least reasonably stay on course, or for that matter actually get wrapped up after a decade or two of work. Until Death Do Us Part is just finishing up at 26 volumes over a run of 10 years for another example, and it was quite enjoyable.

I'm glad they (and naked filler filled cash-ins) are more the exception then the rule though. They're best alongside lots of more focused series, even though I often find myself wishing the latter had more too them I remind myself that in a world where everything ran forever they'd never have gotten made in the first place. Better to end leaving you wishing for more then become stale trash you drop.

>Implying Shonen aren't what these things for

I bet you only read Shoujo.
>>
>>135541025
A majority of shoujo manga used to be written men, which is why pretty much every old school mangaka has written shoujo manga at some point (ex: Tezuka, Chiba, Yokoyama, Umezu), but now almost no men write shoujo or josei manga. There's a few mangaka that used to write shoujo manga in the 70s and 80s but eventually stopped like Shibata Masahiro, Tachihara Ayumi, and Hijiri Yuuki.

The only more modern example I've found is Yamada Nari, as well as some horror mangaka who've done some crossover works like Mikamoto Rei and Junji Itou.

The funny thing is that the longest shoujo manga ever is written by a man and is also shounen ai (Patalliro by Mineo Maya). He's maybe the one male shoujo mangaka still working right now.

There are barely any female Western comic book artists that work in the industry. You'd be hard pressed to find at most five even the fucks at /co/ would recognize.
>>
>>135589384
Well the U.S. Comic industry was pretty much exclusively a boys club for over half a decade while manga was always a bit more diversified, especially because lots of female writers did and still do use pen names and thus the gender of many mangaka was often not known by many. Manga also as a medium is much more diversified than US comics, so females fans and demand were not totally unusual given how many franchisees were specifically catered towards them.

Right now The US comic industry is going through some nutty crusade and trying to implement more diversity and new narratives very suddenly on their existing fanbases, cannabalizing sales and simply turning many away instead of growing their fanbases organically by offering new kinds of works to attract new people who maybe never particularly wanted to read superhero comics.

True, but the vast majority of the industry are those two. Webcomics and independent works are fine, but they suffer from obscurity given how small in scale they are, and many aspiring aruthors simply give up when they don't have support or security from a publisher.

Now that I think about it's interesting to how a number of female mangakas experiment with divergent genres, like yaoi and yuri or mix in action/seinen with romance or whatever. Can make for an interestingly different take on a genre when it's somebody coming from a totally different area.

There used to be a lot of comics for girls in the fifties before that comic protection agency or whatever it was called happened. I haven't looked at exactly how it all went down in a long time so the details are fuzzy for me now, but I can entirely believe you given how things turned out in Japan, or for that matter in every single other form of media. If we look at regular books, TV shows, and movies action stuff (be it shounen or a summer blockbuster) is a financially significant but still small minority. Most of the stuff that gets produced speaks to other aspects of life.

Really, overall the anime/manga industry in Japan looks exactly like you'd expect of a normal, vibrant free market with a low barrier to entry, with everything from super niche to megahits and a huge variety of genres and stuff coming and going and a huge array of different people involved, men & women both. In other words t looks just like books or regular tv or movies (taking into account the varying economic costs anyway). In a much much less mature form that's true even for other countries like Korea too (they still tend to be more derivative but there are a few gems that have happened).

It's the US Comic industry that looks like the outlier with this weird specialization dominating. Guess it goes to show exactly how badly and deeply it got fucked.

And there's no way around it either. The Big Two are gonna keep pumping shit out and the public will only recognize the comic industry as being composed as them instead of something much bigger. Superhero movies aren't helping either.

I also just realized that Archie is the only sitcom SoL-like comic left going and it jumped the shark a long time ago.

Rats, always kind of a shame when that happens. Anons earlier were talking about better to end on the early side with people wanting more then let it go past the end, guess here's another example.

Kind of a waste of the author too really, not just the story. They could be working on better new stuff instead of plowing time into something that's already run dry. Oh well, can still enjoy the good bits I guess.
