I liked the anime but it didn't make any sense until I watched it twice and with better subs (if you can even call funishit subs). Also, I didn't get the shit with the white and black takumis until some anon explained it very neatly.

All in all it was a mess; still, it was kind of cute and had a great OST, which you should download.

Pacing was generally poor. Every 2-episode arc started off with an episode of set-up before the second episode where shit got real, so at the start of every arc you know nothing's going to happen. This problem was amplified in the last arc, which (IIRC) had 3 episodes of set-up, alternating between two separate arcs, before the finale.

But despite pacing problems, I still stick to my point that the overall plot is not complicated at all.

Honestly that was one of the best parts about watching the rolling girls. You didn't get enough understanding of what the fuck was going on til like the third episode. I hate when series try to make their first episode into a prologue info dump.

I think that, although Rolling Girls is not top sales material, it could have done a lot better (not just in sales, also in popularity and reception) if the subs with which it was broadcasted to the western world hadn't been absolute shit. I know Funimation does a bad job usually, but here they redefined my absolute zero for English subs.

Man, and here I was just rewatching a few episodes for fun. Fantastic show, probably the top contender for my AOTY. Great music, great art, animation that makes good use of a limited budget, loveable characters, just such a great show all around. The artstyle in RG wasn't used to "hide" QUALITY. That implies the director knew there was going to be quality and purposely obfuscated it by using the artstyle, which is very unlikely. QUALITY is just a thing that exists in low-budget shows and even in high-budget shots to save money for more important shots. It happens regardless of artstyle

Not necessarily true, the director/designer would definitely know the budget available for a show and could easily plan ahead to deal with it. Utena is the first example that always comes to mind, Ikuhara knew he had an extremely low budget and used cheap animation tricks/recycled animation/etc on purpose as part of the shows design. I've no way to know for certain, but it sure seems to me the staff for RG did something similar with the art design.

This also makes little sense to me. How can the character designs (which I'll admit were great) save the show from QUALITY when QUALITY is essentially the destruction of those designs?
I wish I still had the show downloaded so I could bring up some examples out of episode 3 or the final third of the series. Nevermind the fact that as I mentioned before, it wasn't just shots of the characters being off-model, but shit like several awkward moments in the last episode where the animation wasn't done in time.
