If someone could do a fully animated video tutorial series on C++ programming, replete with cute girls doing cute things, I might be able to conjure up the discipline to get somewhere with that.

No, I watch anime for escapism.

At this point I would watch cute girls doing cute anything at all, and love every second of it.

Cute girls being cute tax attorneys.

Cute girls driving cute garbage trucks.

Cute girls who stare at cute goats.

ANYTHING.

It's still pretty useful for hobbyist game designers, I still use it from time to time if I feel like making a HL2 engine mod.

Really any language is good to learn since what really matters is learning to think like a programmer, after that it's easy to pick up new languages.

>Python
I used to recommend Python as a starting language, but nowadays when I instead recommend JavaScript.

JavaScript is a lot more exciting for a novice to learn because you can very quickly do stuff that would take considerable experience and external libraries to do in Python. Things like GUI interaction, graphics, sound, ability to deploy on multiple platforms (tablets, phones, windows, linux and OSX), etc. all come naturally with JavaScript, while in Python you're stuck doing CLI stuff until you get to grips with the language and it's library system, which can be really frustrating for someone who knows little about programming.

So, >>121413007, learn JavaScript first, and then move to greener pastures as soon as you feel confident. There's a lot of exciting things you can do with it with a little knowledge and there's a lot of tutorials about it online.
>>
I don't know anything. Why are there so many programming languages, and why isn't there an "ultimate" one? If you want to become a really good programmer, does that mean you have to learn more than 2 of these languages?
>>
>>121411919
I hate everything but Python.
>>
>>121413488
Oh well, does anyone has that "Why are there so many standards, we must create another one!
Now there are n+1 standards".
>>
>>121413339
I would recommend starting off doing CLI stuff, especially if you're familiar to Linux and/or UNIX systems. Then you can branch off to the world of web applications by using something like Flask in order to combine Python and website UI.

If you start off with Javascript and intend to do actual websites, you have to juggle HTML, CSS and Javascript at the start.
>>
>>121413488
Different tools for different needs.

Also different styles, paradigms and opinions creates different languages.

Literally just "xkcd standards". First result.
>>
>>121413488
Because some languages are good for one thing and other are good for something else. Sometimes those things are mutually exclusive. It's all a game of trade-offs and picking what matters most to you for a particular task.

Thus, good programmers don't learn languages, they learn to program. Most of them will have one or two languages they're really good at (guru level good), but they'll use whatever language is needed for the job because learning a third or fourth language to a passable level is pretty easy for someone who is good at programming and has solid foundations.

Sometimes a single program is written with two languages. Many times the user interface is coded with something entirely different than the back end.

That's just one example.

I don't advocate learning JavaScript for web development as a start, I advocate for learning JavaScript as a general purpose programming language to learn programming.

You have to understand that for someone who is not at all familiar with programming and particularly someone who is doing the learning by himself and not in a school environment, motivation is very important. Pretty early on, someone who is learning to program in Python is going to ask himself "how do I make a button?" or "how do I make a box move around?" or "how do I make a video game?" or even "I wrote this cool program, how do I get it on my phone?" and then they'll google it and the answer they get for Python will be incredibly off-putting and de-motivating, while JavaScript answers these questions before the even think to ask them. You will, quite reasonably, argue that JavaScript has flaws, and that learning from the foundations is important and not doing so might create bad habit and bad programmers, and all that might be true, but I've lost count how many times I've seen interest in programming killed off because doing something exciting is hard in a traditional programming language.

I learned to program in BASIC and Pascal back in DOS days, and in those times, getting graphics and sound on screen was really easy, and it was really exciting to write my first space invaders clone, it's what kept me coming back to programming. JavaScript is today's BASIC.

You can't say that the way things are done in Haskell isn't fucking genius? Only downside is difficult learning curve + shit performance.
