I think that's the best part, knowing that her aura of indifference and incredulity is really just a barrier between her and the world to give her a means of interacting with it safely and not investing herself in it emotionally.

I like characters like that because they're surprisingly honest in deed, and there's a level of emotional vulnerability to everything they do, which makes the choice of becoming closer to someone, and even the small things like little displays of affection or tolerance, really meaningful.

It really means a lot to have someone smile at you when you know their smiles are measured in teaspoons for fear of being hurt.
