Original sprites are more expressive and the simplicity of them actually allows you to project more realistic qualities to them whereas the PS3 ones look like generic anime cut-outs. Also the backgrounds are more immersive since they're actual 3D places with a filter on them instead of weirdly angled stiff drawings.

The voices themselves are actually pretty fitting but the scenes flow better when you read at your own pace instead of waiting for the voice cues. Overall I'd highly suggest going with the originals first. Plus you have more custom Openings with the originals than you do for the PS3 ones.

Also do I need to play Higurashi first or anything? I've only watched the animu, but the stories aren't related right?

PS3 sprites or bust, the voices are great as well. People saying the voices cover up the music are stupid, you can still hear the music perfectly fine. Most of the reason people like the original sprites is just because that's what they are accustomed to, and it's become Stockholm Syndrome. Use the PS3 sprites with the voices, the voices were even picked out by Ryu himself. Ryu wrote Umineko with voices in mind, so not using them would be like spitting in his face.

I have really mixed feelings about Umineko. The parts where they argue with red and blue text are really cool, but I hate how the solutions to the murders are never explained. Battler arguing with Erika over closed rooms and stuff was the best part, I wish it had more of that and less bullshit padding it out.

Witches' Tanabata practically says she could have moved on with Eva and led a happy life with her, but her obsession with the truth ruined it all. Ange couldn't let go of her family and move on, that was the start of her downfall.
