It just sacrifices natural character development a lot in the earlier novels for tons and tons of descriptive text. It also seems to love having characters lecture other characters on the way the magic world works instead of having them talk to each other naturally as people typically would.

I swear almost all the dialogue between characters in this show aside from maybe Erika's is centered pretty much entirely around long winded exchanges about and procedures involving magic research, theories, technical explanations, how it effects the setting and societal makeup and general application.

I used to think the anime just screwed up, but realistically it's almost impossible to make this sort of thing interesting in a visual medium. Then again the same guy directed Horizon on The Middle of Nowhere which has textbook sized volumes, it's own sets of jargon and slang and long winded technical explanations, but somehow managed to turn it into a really entertaining anime by the time the 24 episodes are up. Sadly Mahouka will probably get a sequel before that one does because Aniplex doesn't really mind using popular LN's to base anime series around whereas Sunrise/Bandai Visual would rather just roll their own IP 9 times out of 10.

That's because Erika is one of the few reasonable characters of the series who although a bit brash she takes time to think of the weird things about Tatsuya. Take Tatsuya out of any scene and the dialogue becomes much more normal without technobabble. Add Miyuki and it's just her squeal for onii-sama. Then a few other haremettes exist just to latch on to Tatsuya.

You know what part really bugs me?

That the author created this extremely intricate, thorough and finely detailed system of magic for his setting and spent all that text taking pains to try and explain it all for the sole purpose of showing how great Tatsuya is because he doesn't have to follow those rules. He's like a nasuverse character writ large.
