I think what you're describing is a lot of the problem I have with G-reco and a lot of other mecha anime. I know realistically goals would take longer to complete but when you have an anime where the majority of episodes is just getting from point A to point B for the plot to actually happen the audience gets bored.

G-reco for example had episodes just full of battles, after battle, after battle. Simply to get to the moon and before they reached that point we basically knew nothing about the true plot or the people preparing for the "reconguista"

A/Z also had that battle of the week bullshit out the wazoo in cour 1 with no actual consequences in till they got to their "goal" for that moment.

Cross Ange is the only one so far where the battles that happen actually have consequences and they don't seem like their contractually obligated to shoehorn in a mecha battle every episode and the battles that do happen each have actual consequences the audience can clearly see. Aldnoah's cour 2 is doing better in this though.
