A lot of manga is shit, which is why the majority only manage the standard low quality prints. Yet for some inconceivable reason, people buy them and treat their volumes like gold as if it weren't already spread all over the internet like cancer.
Hardcover? Full color? Coffee table sized? Now that's collectible that's worth getting and bragging about. Pick up the Collector's Edition Akira, pick up the Anniversary Tezuka, not the A5 shounen jump garbage. This sort of casual displays is no different from the 'post your MAL accounts' thread. If you want to circlejerk or show off, at least have something worth showing off, damn it.
>>121120928 >haha >meng What do you mean "am I still here"? >>121120945 >uses "moeshit" >thinks a manga board would be good Yeah, you'd all be able to post your tokyopop shelves 24/7, like battlestation threads on /g/. >once in a while Wow, it's almost as like you didn't just have a thread reach bump limit.
>>121120963 To be fair, buyfag threads are full of figurefags. I think a separate general manga thread is better rather than sifting through figures. There is plenty to talk about regarding collections and shit, see >>121076154
>>121083310 I have seen the comparison between the Japanese releases and the Viz ones. The lack of color pages IS a pretty big deal, mate. If you're gonna spend money collecting manga you like, then I say you should do it properly.
>>121121085 >I think a seperate general about buying things is better than a general about buying things Everything gets talked about in buyfag threads, you idiots would just get shitposted to hell because you're attention whores with awful collections. >>121121118 >because it's much much cheaper. It's actually more expensive.
>>121121172 >you idiots would just get shitposted to hell because you're attention whores with awful collections. Pretty much this. I've posted my manga/doujin collections in buyfag threads, no problem.
>>121121235 >>121121254 Really? Did you guys conveniently filter out the large chunk of autism about localizing, followed by more autism about how physical collections are pointless? Or the ones thinking that their stacks of Shingeki and Bleach were worth bragging about?
There's like what, 100 posts tops that actually was about the collection of manga.
>>121121044 Yes, we had one thread that is going to bump any minute now plus one one page thread. Meanwhile we have 89 anime threads on /a/ this very fucking instant. If you still think this thread is redundant or taking away space for anime, your autism is uncurable, I'm so fucking sorry anon.
>>121121390 Read it in fucking Mandarin for all I care, don't buy localized shit and claim you have a collection. >>121121404 >We have 89 anime threads on /a/ this fucking instant Oh, the humanity! By all means, let's start a general where underage retards can post their room in their parents house with a shelf full of Bleach and SnK. This is practically blogshit.
>>121121404 If you want to make a thread to show off your collection, at least make sure you have something cool/ rare/ uncommon to show off. The previous thread was filled with a shit ton of people just posting their SnK/Bleach/One Piece.
>>121121540 >collection You know what a collection is, right? It's not exactly an exclusivist term. Some people collect cereal boxes. I read an interview with a guy who collected literal shit.
If you don't like threads like these because they're not conductive to actual conversation, cool (though neither are waifu threads and a ton of other shit up on the board at this very moment), but I have no idea where this weird collection elitism shit is coming from. You might as well say you can't collect horror movies unless you get the original film reels.
>>121121696 Because I actually WANT to see people who have interesting things in their collection. And in order to know if they do or not, I would have to actually be in the thread. Also because what, only people who agree with you are allowed to post?
>>121121819 then wait until someone comes along. These threads aren't so bad when posted every once in a while at the times people with big japanese collections are actually on /a/. I never implied that, I just said don't complain so much
See, I'd follow you if official localizations were bad in manga, but they really aren't. And they haven't been for a long time. I mean, people who buy garbage battle shonen do have shit taste. I don't even know if I have any right to speak, I'm thinking about buying the Tsubasa omnibuses. And deep down, when executed right (like Kongou Banchou, for instance) battle manga is sort of my guilty pleasure.
>>121121840 I already fucking said this, EVERYTHING is posted in buyfag threads. You faggots would just get laughed out, because you're doing nothing but blogging. >>121121848 Are you retarded? Why fucking make a new thread after one was just up for 24 hours when all you idiots do is shit that falls under the buyfag thread. >>121121898 >generals are justified because someone MIGHT post something interesting
>>121121987 If you've ever been in one, you'd know that it isn't just 16 year olds posting localized manga over and over again. Nobody's even posted a fucking collection in this thread, it's a cancerous general for people who think buyfag threads are "too elitist" because they told them to take their Naruto volumes and fuck off.
>>121122014 And the chinks too. Which is kinda unfair since they've got HK and Taiwan (and Singapore as well, I guess) together to cater to the chinese speakers.
>>121121920 English releases are a mixed bunch. Yeah, Vertical's releases are pretty good, but some like Viz tend to have some consistency issues going (e.g. Dorohedoro). That and the fact that you never know when they'll drop/put on hold a series (Zetsubou Sensei still stuck in what, vol 14 or so? Cromartie last few volumes license defunct etc).
>>121122128 But, anon, there is! Hiramoto started it up again in September. It's been going monthly in YM the 3rd, but nobody seems to care about scanning it anymore. I'm guessing we'll see translations after the next volume drops.
It's impressive he works on Prison School weekly snf Devil Blues monthly at the same time.
>>121122115 >If you've ever been in one, you'd know that it isn't just 16 year olds posting localized manga over and over again. Yeah, just posting figures over and over again, with more variation only in that figures are fucking expensive so people are more choosey. >Nobody's even posted a fucking collection in this thread, it's a cancerous general for people who think buyfag threads are "too elitist" because they told them to take their Naruto volumes and fuck off. Because it's being consumed by shitposting, but also because we didn't need another thread.
>>121122156 Just wait like ten years. Viz is bringing over what I would hope to be the entirety of Jojo starting later this month with every subsequent release being every three fucking months god fucking damn it
>Buy Steel Angel Kurumi as it's released by ADV >ADV drops it 2 volumes from it ending >No scanlators ever picked it up to finish it off. >This was 10 years ago. >Still don't know how it ended because for every plot string they tied up, they created 4 or 5 new ones. FUCK
>>121122206 I'm very excited to hear that. I finally got around to buying the manga a few months back and was extremely disappointed that there was nothing new since I'd began reading scans back in 2008.
>>121122115 I agree with you on the narudo thing but you don't seem to understand that buyfag threads are just figurine threads and people who post there care for figurines exclusively. It all boils down to the fact that people care about and want to discuss manga collections but can't do so in buyfag threads and that's why this thread exists.
And, again, one thread about manga won't kill the board. Why don't Ou go ahitpost in one of those "every day until you like it" threads, there are shit threads like that all the time.
>>121121920 >>121122169 I agree with you both. I'm bummed about SZS, Cromartie and Aria never being completed. The latter two have to do with the company actually going under. English manga releases have definitely gotten much better over the years. Yeah, Vertical is my go-to publisher for quality shit.
>>121122375 I've not had the pleasure of any JoJo outside Stardust Crusaders. A friend and I would go to bookstores together in high school, pick up a couple volumes of manga, then read and swap them back and forth in our art and German classes. I read the first five volumes of JoJo through him, while I lent him GetBackers.
I've now got the first ten volumes myself and am wondering if Viz plans to reprint Stardust Crusaders in hardcover like they're doing with Parts 1 and 2. If so, I may just hold off on the last few volumes.
>>121122334 >you don't seem to understand that buyfag threads are just figurine threads and people who post there care for figurines exclusively. Not true at fucking all. Like I said before, you fucking idiots would just get told to fuck off for posting baby's first manga volumes with potato images.
>>121122433 I'd like to take you out back kick you to the ground break your fucking ballsack in three different places call you a bastard call your mother a fucking whore spit on you pull out a bottle of cheap booze and a match and fucking watch as I burn to death and call you a fucking baka
>>121122455 I want all of it. I even visited a few Japanese bookstores in the area and picked up some untranslated copies of SBR back when I never thought we were getting any more. >>121122486 I'm not aware that they are but of course that could change. Since the Part 3 reprint and bringing out Parts 1 and 2, I got the feeling they're going to want to jump ahead to Part 4 next.
Did somebody say "shitty iPhone pictures of localized crap"? Because I thought I heard someone say "shitty iPhone pictures of localized crap".
There's a bunch of used bookstores by me, so when I find this shit for cheap, I pick it up. Otherwise, I don't really buy manga.
I got nostalgic recently for old Tokyopop series, so I grabbed a few volumes on amazon to complete King of Bandits and vol 1 of The Third. Nisekoi was scattered in the bargain bin at Half Price Books. Looks like they've never been opened. I think I've got the FLCL Omnibus around here somewhere as well. Felt like I needed it at the time.
>>121121511 The yen is weak. Ship via SAL parcel or something and you'll end up saving money and getting better quality releases and selection. It's like you don't even put thought into your shitposting.
>>121122688 >I don't understand why /a/ hates localized manga so much. It's not like you care about the author getting his share, because he doesn't get them from scans either. That's why people buy manga, you idiot. There's no point in collecting an overpriced version of something that doesn't support the author. >Is it just like a dubs vs subs thing that makes people argue over nothing? Not over nothing, dubs are garbage. Localized manga is better than subs, but still bad. This thread is essentially "look at my shelf full of dub only anime".
>>121121800 I'm thinking about ordering these. Really unsure on the Tsubasa book though. Cause I like CLAMP (although, Blood-C was like the worst thing I've ever watched and enjoyed) and have always been curious about this one, but I hear it becomes a real clusterfuck.
that's because you like to pre-emptively clog up these threads the first grubby chance you get. Like you, I'm not the only one, of the people who are fine with these threads, to defend them. The last thread had more than enough people who are like that to sustain some sort of discussion. Irrelevant shit is usually ignored or don't last for long. Okay so their collections are worthless to you. What's keeping you around these parts any way? Some wasted sense of duty you have there.
>thread full of /v/ crossboarders and newfags posting localized shit, as well as video games >same fucking pictures This is exactly like those fucking /g/ generals. I even see people from /g/ posting. Fuck off, you fucking attention whores
>>121122662 Your manga collection is fine anon. Don't know about those game novels though. I'm not a /lit/ elitist but i can't imagine those being any good. I once read a star wars novel though so maybe i should stfu.
>>121122819 >>121122887 I'll admit I went a little too far at least i caught myself before I bought the spin offs I still like it but not nearly as much as when I first started reading and I hated bleach whenever I tried reading it
>>121122874 I tried taking it off the stand back foot first, the front peg would come out, too much force mixed with being an idiot and I bent back the front peg and the back 2 came scraping down the base
>>121122858 I won't lie, it's not great. King of Bandits is one of my favorite manga purely for the nostalgia, so I think the anime is what I would experience without the benefit of said nostalgia. It isn't bad, just completely forgettable. However, the 7th Heaven OVA is leagues better. Like a solid 8/10. If the King of Bandits anime had the budget and attention the OVA did, it would have been much better. So, watch both; don't expect great things from the anime and you'll make it out ok.
>>121122910 Actually They're mostly very good! The Mass Effect novels and the BioShock novel are fantastic. One of the ME books is so bad it's obivous that the Author didn't even play the game. I tried returning it to the store but I pitched the receipt. oh well at least it looks nice.
>>121123053 $32. I bought her and a Unit-01 for $45 but that has yet to arrive.
>>121123072 Different anon here. You're part of the problem for engaging and replying all this while. And they have a point too. The old thread already left shit with a bad taste. If you want to start a new thread, at least wait for a couple of days or something.
>>121122990 I don't give a single shit what any singular thread is about on a board with several dozen different threads running simultaneously, I just want to know why this one has your panties in a bunch but I never see you in waifu threads.
>>121123098 some good taste in a modest collection. The Mizuki in between the Tatsumi volumes is bothering me. I just like grouping an authors' work together. Those Sunny volumes are luscious. Love the spines. Gengaku Picasso seems like shonen shit compared to Furuya's other work. Is it any good?
>>121122941 Hey, the first couple Bleach volumes are solid. Or they had potential at least. Same with the anime. Damn shame Kubo's wild ride ruined it.
I feel the same about AoT. Again, it had potential that was just never realized. Now it's a mediocre manga with a mediocre anime adaptation and a fucking awful fanbase.
>>121123221 Bleach will always have a special place in my heart, but I just can't reconcile what Kubo did to it. You could cut the number of volumes in half by removing minor bullshit and plot points that never come up again.
>>121122688 Or maybe it's got to do with the fact that they have a tendency to drop titles left and right. And you're supposed to pay these guys. Fuck, even scanlation groups have got better track record.
chink reader here though, so to you English readers: haha suck it.
>>121123266 I just organize by size then title. Organizing by author ruins the size organization usually. Genkaku Picasso is okay. The art is great, but the story is a little straightforward and sappy. I'd say it's worth a read if you like Furuya. I really just want Palepoli to get an English release already.
>>121123340 >Bleach will always have a special place in my heart I dare honestly say that early Bleach is a solid series (for a battle manga) and Kubo actually is a pretty competent artist. It's the whole Jump curse of having to drag things on that really ruined it all.
>>121123472 I agree. I honestly believe that Bleach should have ended after Aizen was defeated. It honestly should not have continued, there was no where to go. I heard that they killed the king of soul society but I have no interest on catching up on the last 4 years.
>>121123545 I've been slowly gathering Black Jack over the years. Some volumes are OOP and ridiculously priced. Definitely my second fave Tezuka after Buddha. I was lucky to buy Phoenix all at half off from someone who "couldn't get into it."
>>121123472 >>121123555 I suppose I can live with that. If Kubo hadn't dragged out the whole Arrancar/Aizen thing it would have been much better. That was when it became painfully obvious that he was just making shit up to fill pages. Even the later stuff has some cool ideas, but after the train wreck in the middle, I just can't bring myself to give a fuck.
>>121123535 King of Bandits is kind of charming because (to me at least) it seems the art got worse as the manga went on. The anime is... consistent at least? Again, I don't regret watching it twice or anything and the dub isn't quite as bad as I expected but it didn't live up to my nostalgia. It's like looking at pictures of your first crush and remebering she had bad teeth or something. The OVA is really best case scenario; like looking at pictures of your first crush and thinking "guess my taste wasn't complete shit after all". Oh, the music was pretty good in both though. It was all done by Scudelia Electro and has some truly 10/10 compositions.
>>121122717 That's not even all of it unfortunately It's an okay series. It's really one of a kind the story is just really good in my opinion. I'm excited for The Phantom Pain but unless they remake the original 2 games before Solid I hope Kojima stops making them I don't want him to drag it out any more Peace Walker had a 10% chance of being fantastic and he fucking nailed it but luck runs out.
>>121123682 Guess that guy who couldn't get into it cursed himself when he saw how the price skyrocketed. I love the interconnecting spine on those harcover Buddha release and I would be so extremely jelly if I see a shelf here with those.
>>121123876 >Peace Walker had a 10% chance of being fantastic and he fucking nailed it Really? I recently beat PW and I thought it was awful. I hated the micro-managing, the arcade-y gameplay, and the pointless story. I was disappointed with 4's melodramatic nostalgia trip, too. I hope MGSV is more along the lines of 2+3.
>>121124091 Peace Walker's story. Oh dear god do I hate the MicroManaging and the shit to build Zeke and all that nonsense but it's originaly for the PSP you gotta make some aspects of it your normal PSP-tier bullshit.
>>121124425 I liked peace walker because I could drop in/drop out at any time. If I was eating shit on a boss battle I could go grind weapons or staff. It was significantly easier in the stealth area, boss battles took longer than their mainline counterparts.
>>121124630 Well, the main guy is trying to find out why his face is a fucking lizard and he's basically collecting clues. I guess you could call it a mystery manga with a lot of supernatural elements and great worldbuilding. It' probably going to end with a big twist but it's an amazing ride, really.
>>121124819 Are you talking localized versions or something?
You can get 1-37 of Vagabond for 5000 yen from used bookstores and amazon maketplace in Japan. Even considering shipping and proxy fees, that's less than a hundred bucks. 150 Euro sounds like a ripoff to me.
>>121124893 I don't think liking manga and following multiple series makes you a weaboo. And I can't see why it would be so hard explaining your liking for manga. Now, if you like loli then it's hard to talk your way out of that one.
>>121125188 Do Germans charge quadruple shipping and taxes compared to the rest of the world or something? 40 volumes of manga is barely 6kg. I find it hard to believe you are getting charged 100 euros for a 6kg shipment.
>>121125400 What I do anon, is use a reliable proxy service. And send all my book purchase to the proxy and ship them all together. They charge a fee, but generally it saves me a lot of trouble of not having to stick to one store to save shipment cost, ending up cheaper. Not to mention much easier to communicate and request with the proxy service.
My Amazon, amiami, and other purchases defaults to send to the proxy service address. Once all my stuff are there, I request oversea shipping and they do all the packing and handling. The lack of hassle is awesome.
>>121125634 YP has glossy covers and whiter paper. YP is very very slightly taller than the ADV editions. I prefer the texture of the ADV covers but the YP editions feel sturdier. Probably more readily available too since ADV is OOP.
>>121125689 Seems like Del Rey released through volume 5 before they went under. It's original publisher is Kodansha but Kodansha USA hasn't picked it up. So yeah, only 1-5 are available in English through Del Rey's editions.
>>121125742 No, you buy from Japanese shops and these get delivered to a private Japanese delivery company (the proxy) who in turn deliver everything to you. So you end up paying multi local costs + one large international costs VS multi international costs.
>>121125742 Yes. That's pretty much exactly how it works. It's not a fake address, it's a business location (probably just a house)
They will hold stuff up to a month, so I can make casual purchases and have everything sent there. Then when I'm ready to have them shipped, I send a shipping request, and they'll re-package everything nicely to fit in a box, and send me the bill.
This allows you to buy from pretty much anywhere in Japan (as long as you have some way of paying for it) even if they don't have international shipping.
Oh, I see. I guess i have been doing it wrong all this time. That solves the problem of best deals never having int shipping. Welp, off to read the buyfag guide for further information. Thanks for the advice.
>>121125948 I've got a bunch of those already. I'll definitely finish the Yen Press collection, but I like out of print stuff. I'm a collector at heart. The fact that they only published 5 volumes is actually really appealing because that's less that I have to track down to complete the set.
This is also a conduction, but it's shitty and posted by a crossboarding newfriend.
Is that so hard to understand? A Naruto thread is also an anime thread, and so is a rec thread and a SnK thread, but aside from the cancer and filth that inhabits them NO ONE wants them around. You're not breaking any rules, except for not lurking, /v/.
I can also save money by sending shit I don't need right away - say, if I buy 60 volumes of older manga I read years ago, but never got around to owning them, purchased in a bargain used books - on surface (ocean) mail that takes 2-3 months.
It costs less than half the shipping cost. Hell, I can get 60 volumes of good condition manga for less than $180 this way.
>>121126168 It follows the anime pretty closely. It expounds on some things more, so the plot/backstory makes more sense. AFAIK it "splits off" at the very end. Instead of being alone on the beach, the world resets and they live happily ever after. I prefer the manga because it allows for more exposition and explanation.
>>121126168 I just started on voulme 9. I wouldn't say there's a definite point yet where it spins off, only that there's some differences in back-stories, some events are further fleshed out, and some backstories are expanded on
>Buy both the lesser popular titles that everybody seems to praise in this thread along with the Viz localized Jump titles >Tempted to post my shelf just to see people shit themselves trying to make heads or tails of my tastes
>>121126366 To be fair, I think people wouldn't bat an eye if said jump titles were something like HxH or Slam Dunk. Its just Nuturu, One Piece, and Bleach we really have disdain for. And even not so much for OP.
>>121126526 When the anime aired and brought in all the casuals who think it's 10/10 masterpiece.
>It was well-regard not that long ago Well it was one of those manga that had a relatively tame, inoffensive and quiet fanbase. I'm not saying the manga is bad, but it sure as hell wasn't some literary masterpiece.
My humble collection, I got the shoujo beat tanks for half the price so it was a good buy and I like arina tanemura works sorry about the shit quality of the image, the only camera I have is my phone and it is quite old
>>121126366 Their sheer mentality is idiotic to be honest.
I'm the guy with a thousand manga above, and as a life time manga reader it consists of various demographics and genre, and not all of them are good. Hell, if I counted the manga I owned in my lifetime, including when I was still in Japan, it'd be no less than two thousand, and manga actually "read" would be easily triple that. Something doesn't need to be "good to impress other people" for it to be on my shelf. There are shelves of shounen manga, some good, some mediocre, and there are tons of great mature seinen manga as well. And shoujo. And Tezuka hardbound. Etc.
A REAL manga reader doesn't give two shits about people's opinion about certain genre, title, or choice in collection. We read ANYTHING that suits our interest at the moment, critique comes afterwards.
>>121126605 >literary masterpiece only a select few can transcend the stigma of the 'manga' label. 'Masterpiece' is a very polarizing term. SnK is pretty decent in comparison to the myriad of titles out there, no shame in that. And as an action series it's rather thrilling.
>>121127451 Basically Kodansha USA has a huge boner for omnibus volumes.
It's reminiscent of the VizBig omnibus volumes of older series. It's a huge omnibus volume of AoT, I'm guessing two or three volumes, to fit the Titan theme of the series. I honestly have no idea if they've ever released another one besides the first one.
