First, shirobako's volumes are ranking high on Amazon right now, Volume 2 ranked higher than Yuki Yuna volume 1, but I'm not talking about it, right now Shirobako 1 is ranking on Oricon meanwhile Yuki Yuna 2 is not.

G reco 2 also ranked really high on Oricon, it looks like it will sell 10k, that means Oricon's volume 1 report was messed up indeed.

What development did any character except Karin have in first 6 episodes?

Itsuki starts as a timid, shy girl, discovers her love of singing and gets over her confidence issues with the help of the Hero Club, resolves to become someone who can stand beside her older sister rather than cower behind her.

We learn Fuu's motivations for becoming a Hero, and how her outgoing personality hides a self-loathing complex which causes her to continually blame herself for the things that happen to her sister and the Hero Club.

Even Tougou eventually gets over her fear of her disability holding her friends back and resolves to protect her friends (esp. Yuuna) instead of them always protecting her.

Really, the only character who didn't get development is Yuuna herself, she's the biggest enigma of the cast.
