>Dub actors sound like they're reading
Every time. Dubfags, does this bother you?
>>
>>120510259
No. And I don't think you know what dub means.
>>
>>120510358
Obviously I know that the original Japanese is also dubbed in, but that doesn't make English dubs any less shit
>>
I recall seeing someone say that the dub actors usually don't even get to see the script before they show up for recording.
>>
>>120510259
thankfully my country i on the top three best dubs in the world, so I don't usually trip on bad dubs.
>>
>>120510827
Are you fucking kidding me?
Why?
>>
>>120510827
I've heard Steve Blum say this is how they recorded Cowboy Bebop, and I think you're right about it being a common practice. They call it a cold reading. Basically the actors are just reading off the script and trying to put some feeling into it
>>
English dubbing itself I am fine with. What I don't like are lazy translations that are full of run-on sentences and the characrers addressing others by name every single time.

>hentai dubbed in English
>that one gemale actress that does most of them
>>
I think it bothers me more when the sub voices are doing by-the-numbers archetype impressions. You know what I'm talking about. The male sounds like Shonen Protagonist #412, the cold female character uses that soft-spoken, deadpan voice you've heard hundreds of times before etc.

Sometimes localization teams hire actors who don't quite fit the character, probably because that's all they could get/afford, but this actually causes a more interesting performance and overall result.
>>
>>120510259
Maybe some very low quality dubs but many, many sound absolutely fine.
I realise there is a huge stigma attached to liking a dub but honestly 90% are fine/good.
Since many don't actually speak Japanese you don't really noticed that Japanese dubs arn't all that good either, I've heard many Japanese dubbing with acting that felt very forced or what other complains you might have with English dubbing.
I think another problem is just that reading a line of dialogue it doesn't sound too silly but when you have that read aloud to you by someone in a language you can comprehend it starts to sound very cringey when people says things like "I promise... I WON'T LET YOU DIE! HYAAA"
Many don't want to acknowledge dub fans as "fans" since you need that superiority complex and watching a dub you'll lose that feeling; That is perfectly natural though.
>>
Gotta blame the sound director mates

Every single time.
>>
>>120511153
Those cringey sounding lines are actually quirks of the Japanese language that, to your foreign ear, sound ridiculous. However, a native Japanese speaker would find a line like "Goku, please don't die!" to be perfectly acceptable, whereas an English speaker would prefer to say something like "Take care of yourself, Goku." Saying that the dialogue is ridiculous in both languages is incorrect, but I think that a person can gauge the quality of the performance regardless of language. So if a performance is too hammy, then the Japanese will probably agree, even if they find the dialogue to be fine.

And I do question the logic of something that is only "fine" being preferable to something that is usually very good (The original voices)

Because nobody cares about dubbing in America? Thats why there are only like 5 dub actors in the US. In japan is an actual respected profession so a few jobs is enough to make a living. In America you get paid peanuts so you need to take a million jobs to break even.

Japnaese voices are objectively superior. They seem to understand emotion, English VAs don't

>inb4 you don't speak japanese

I do in fact. I watch raws. What now?
>>
>>120511153
Lines aside I still appreciate hearing emotion behind their words.

English VA's just simply don't care enough I guess, none of them sound like they try hard at all.

It's still awk walking in on a younger sibling watching something dubbed and hearing corny lines in English

I don't watch dubs personally, but I know that most of them are cold readings so I tend to cut them a little slack. It's hard to act well when you're reading the script for the first time as you're acting it...
>>
>>120511577
Haruhi and Kyon sounded awful in the dub. Kyon sounded bored/pretentious and Haruhi sounded like she was 50 years old.

Why the fuck? That makes absolutely zero sense.
>>
Pretty much every Japanese VA took courses on voice acting before they get roles, while the English side is just as long as you can read, you can have the role.
>>
>>120511782
I guess it's just easier to not bother with it if all the dubfags will watch it and love it anyway.
>>
>low quality english voice acting
Anglos will never understand how it actually sounds. Good god.

>In japan is an actual respected profession so a few jobs is enough to make a living.
Not really, no. They get paid peanuts, and if you don't also do music, modeling, radio, etc... then you probably aren't going to make ends meet.
>>
>>120511704
>Anime is looked down on by the average Japanese
It's not. Being an obsessive antisocial nerd is looked down on. Tons of Japanese people watch anime, just like tons of Americans watch cartoons like Family Guy, Simpsons, Spongebob, Adventure Time, Rick and Morty, etc... They just don't elevate it to the position that otaku or foreigner weebs do.

most VAs are unknown to japanese society

Female English language voice actresses always sound like they're 40 pretending to be teenagers. They can't pull it off the way Japanese women do.
>>
>>120511863
Well, yeah. It's basically like getting VAs for cartoons made in your own country. Of course you're gonna need voice training to get a job there.

The real question is if Japanese dubs of english properties follows the same effect.

It bothers me, but it's not like every dub is bad. Most of the people who complain about how terrible Eng dubs are haven't watched an Eng dub in years, decades, or ever. 20 years ago dubs were lower quality and there were less actors, but the quality has been rising. People love to shit on dubs because we used to have to buy VHS and stuff, but since we have dual audio now, there isn't a reason to be so vehement to the concept of dubs. I watch more subs than dubs, but I always try the dub when it's available because they're usually tolerable at worst.

This is flat wrong. Most of the people on /a/ weren't even around back then. The truth is that modern dubs suck.
>>
>>120513936
the whole point of the image is that the people who aren't around blindly follow the people who were there when they showed up, even though they don't know why. People constantly post the "congratulations" thread, or post copypastas, or tell others to go back to reddit, or call others newfags for the same reason, it's something they've seen others do before, and they do it to try to fit in.
>>
If I where to dub, I would first watch the show without subtitles, then read the script. That would give me the best general idea what to say. Not to far from the original dialogue, but still original.
Or, you know, since Japs are well connected to gaijin, they could work with them to make an english script. But then again, that probably wouldn't work because of budget and so on, plus Japs have been known to be Xenophobic
>>
>>120513936
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SubbingVersusDubbing
>This is because, in the days before DVD's, companies releasing translated anime could only release either a subtitled or a dubbed version of a program on a single VHS tape.
It would be easier if the dubfags would just link to tvtropes right away, but I guess the bait would lose its effectiveness.

Not only is that image false, but newfags absolutely love to be snowflakes who stand out. Retards are actually much more likely to try and speak out if they disagree with how things are done around here.

It's a terrible example because the shower was technically beyond monkey control, while any idiot can download and check out a dub of any series to see how bad they are.
