Really wish someone had told me to stop at episode 18. I can't unsee that travesty of an ending.

The ending was fine. It's implied that he received the ball of light that grants wishes (which was mentioned as being a 'legend of the city' in season 1 I think), and that he uses it after Ushio dies.

It's been a while since I watched Clannad but I think he first contemplates wishing he had never met Nagisa so he would never have had to suffer but then realizes that he had a lot of good times with her too, and wishes her back to life or some shit. But they don't do a good job of explaining it.

There were those stupid robot sequences too; I don't really remember how they fit in. Man, I really need to rewatch Clannad.

Although the anime is still good, alot of the shit isn't explained. The ending was a total deus ex machina but in the VN it fits because its foreshadowed in all the routes as you learn about The Hidden World and the myths about the town "where wishes come true". The reason the anime ending feels stupid is just because they were trying to cram all the plot development from the different routes into Nagisa's romance so you didn't get the idea of the Hidden World existing outside of time.

Is wish granting other worlds a generic concept? Because it feels kind of specific, but this isn't the only place I've seen it.

It's foreshadowed in almost every start of the episodes. "The world where wishes comes true" also stated in Nagisa's drama script (and when she trained under the street lamp). When she tells the story about a girl in an unknown world people would have understand that she's referencing the mysterious girl and the robot. Hell, I haven't picked up the VN yet even I can understand that.

I liked where it was going until Ushio died for no reason. If it was just Okazaki getting over Nagisa's death and successfully raising Ushio it would of been 10/10. I guess it's a happier ending and all but it felt better that he fixed everything even after losing Nagisa.

The ending is nothing. What really bugs me is the lack of aftermath in Nagisa's death. No funeral, no scuffle between the husband and the daughter, no grieving at all. She just faded out of existence and was replaced immediately by Ushio. Kotomi's character got reduced to Captain Obvious and her violin once an outward expression of the screams of her inner soul now a mere angle for a joke, but at least someone was sad to see her go.

It's obvious when you're seeing how Tomoya has changed from a guy who teases people all of the time but can be nice and responsible when it comes to the people he knows turn, into that bitter and smileless guy even when he meet Ushio. No, him refusing to take care of Ushio should have been obvious that it's that hard of blow for him.

Yes, everything's implied, and it might even be an attempt to portray how lost Okazaki was during this time, but it's still a dick move for the studio to not pay respect where respect is due.

If the revival didn't happen, Nagisa and Ushio stayed dead, then Tomoya accept that they're already memories and move on, I would totally rate Clannad 10/10.
If Tomoya decided to move on with Kyou it would be 12/10.
Too bad they had to make a "happy" end, so it's 8/10 at best.

I guess we just have different opinions on what we like in a story. I would prefer the journey to feel more natural (which usually means its longer) rather than just skipping between major plot points. That being said i don't disagree that the anime had better pacing. I just think that when weighing my experiences of both, the VN came out on top.
