Why is everyone acting like /a/ is going to die?

/a/ will still be here. You will wake up tomorrow and check the catalog as usual. And nothing will have changed.

You'll be able to tell a vast difference mostly in moderation and how site administration handles things. /a/ may as well already be dead.

I don't think there is going to be a new admin, moot doesn't want all the responsibility to rest on one person so he'll just have mods manage it as a team. And regardless of what might happen, /a/ isn't dead yet. I'm just saddened to see /a/nons making suicide pacts already and saying they're going to move on from /a/. If everyone leaves, then it will be them who killed /a/.

To be honest, 4chan has already changed quite a lot, even during the 11 years when moot was admin.

Of course change is inevitable. I am all for change as long as they are tolerable.

A lot of people applauded 4chan because there are no accounts, and is considered more "free" than other online communities.

I will probably continue to browse 4chan as long as I live. Unless it becomes too stifling like Reddit or Facebook.

The whole anonymity is what I like most about this place, no bullshit about registering for shit just plane and simple posting, there's no namefagging like there is on places like Reddit and doesn't have the same retarded upvoting system and most importantly Moot does not sell our private information to companies to make himself or others richer. He and this place are truly a bastion of free speech which is slowly being robbed from the internet.

Congrats Moot, you had a great 11 years, I just hope the new admins don't fuck up and decide to make this place more corporate and capitalize on us.

Here's to you as it's been a great ride:

Even this wouldn't be so bad as long as it was based on an antiquated design.

Registering for accounts in the 90s/early 2000s:
>e-mail address required

Registering for accounts in this day & age:
>e-mail address required
>legal full name required
>date of birth required
>home address required
>phone number required
>connection to Facebook/Twitter/Linkedin sometimes required
>scan of two pieces of ID sometimes required
It's too fucking convoluted.

It very much is the problem. It may not be *your* problem, but it is a huge problem that is prevalent.

For instance, you called me a "fucking retard" just now. Since we are on an anonymized system, I can't do anything to you.

If we were on an identity-based system, that would be bad. If you pissed someone off real badly, he or she could make your life hell. With more information being able to be traced back to you, you are left more vulnerable.

I get your point. You want to remain anonymous so you can call me a "fucking retard" without any consequences. I actually want that, too. I am a proponent of free speech, and I believe that you should have the right to say anything you want without any hindrance to your well-being.

So yes, that IS the problem with usernames and registration, "you fucking retard."

>>
>>120179136
Excuse me, but I was the one who wrote that post, and I know exactly what I meant.

The more convoluted registration becomes, the more weight your words have.

An anonymized system works best because I can say pretty much anything I want, with little to no consequences.

If I say something while using an account that has my personal information tied to it, I would be in for a world of hurt if I happen to offend someone.

You fucking dick.

I would also prefer that you stop being an idiot.
>>
>>120179379
What the fuck? You have to be misunderstanding something, because nobody in this thread disagrees with you. Your original post just made it sound like the problem with registration is "baww it takes too long" when the problem is that it restricts anonymity like you said.

So, no, a registration system would still be shit even if it was based on an "antiquated design", contrary to your dogshit opinion that registration "wouldn't be so bad" if it's simple as stated in >>120178257

>>120179502
>I said it would be a lesser evil to the alternative.

You did not.

Unbelievable how you'd be upset that people attack you for saying registration wouldn't be so bad. You're the one that made a shitty post that doesn't reflect what you were trying to say in the first place.

Goddamn you're an autist.
>>
>>120179774
I acknowledge that you found difficulty in understanding my post.

If push came to shove, and simple registration was enforced, I might *reluctantly* give into it. I still wouldn't like it, but it would be better than the modern bullshit you see on most sites these days.

I acknowledge that my point did not come across to you clearly. It's a good thing we're anonymous, because you seem steamed.
>>
>>120176754

>I might *reluctantly* give into it

Thought so, faggot.
>>
>>120180684
Didn't moot say he broke even with 4chan? Did 4chan start becoming profitable at some point?
>>
I hope so, but every time I've seen a site sold it went to shit. I think the new admin will be fine as long as moot owns the place, but the problem is what's next.

If moot's smart and cares about the community, he'd turn 4chan into a nonprofit and give users some say in selecting the mods. But I expect him to cash in, the new owners to ruin it, and the community to disperse, because that's how the internet works.
>>
>>120180806
If I offend someone on the internet and the most info they can dig up on me is my e-mail address, the worst thing that could happen is that I'll get gay porn in my junk mail folder.

If I offend someone while using an account with highly sensitive info attached to it, I am at their mercy. They could publish my name anywhere and tell the world that I am a bad man. And maybe they'll even kick me in the nuts.

I'd rather get gay porn in my junk mail than get kicked in the nuts. I'd prefer neither, but if it came down to it, at least the gay porn is manageable.
>>
>>120180838
I think he actually did start making some profit on it eventually, yeah, though I have no idea how much, I know that running and hosting an affair like 4chan is very expensive, lots of traffic and data going through every day, every hour, every minute, every single second.

>>

>give users some say in selecting the mods
Goddammit, no.

Whenever we have shitty mods, there was only one person to blame: moot.

If the users had any say in mod selection, we'll have thousands of people to blame.

The only time 4chan users argue with each other is to prove whose waifu is better. We don't need any pseudo-political arguments going on.

>>
>>120181207

Approval voting and supermajority requirements would reduce that effect a ton. 50% is probably a bad idea for exactly that reason - a mod should be respected by the vast majority of the board, not just half.

Just as long as we don't get a "veto everyone" obstructionist clique.

>man behind the memes

Every time.

What's funny though is that when 4chan dies, people will think Reddit invented memes. Hell, a lot of normalfags think that already.
>>
>>120181743

For incumbents, lists of mod actions would work. There's already the ban page - link each mod's ban/delete history, redacting anything they actually can't show, and vote for re-election.

For new mods, you have a damn good point and I guess democracy doesn't work online after all.
>>
>>120181743
>moot remains the owner of 4chan
Assuming moot makes any sort of money from 4chan, he probably won't let it go. Hell, he hasn't slammed the door on this place even when he was losing money from it; and if he did, I wouldn't blame him.
>>
>>120181868
>he has a PhD

>>
People who say that this site is going to stay the same are absolutely delusional. Volunteer mods and a board of directors will ruin this place simply because they are not tied to it and therefore do not care about it. moot stuck with us for this long because it was his own single creaton. Now these new leaders are going to burn this place into the ground (likely by implementing shitty new additions and trying to bring in a larger demographic). They will think of 4chan as a business to profit off of now and nothing else.

If /a/ and /v/ had the same userbase then /a/ would be filled with the same >tfw no girlfriend blog threads as /v/. Gundam threads get replies on /a/ though. Just about everything does. In fact, that's the best thing about /a/, is that taste is so diverse among the large userbase that you can discuss pretty much any anime to some extent if you make a thread right. Not everything is going to get 500 replies but there's always someone who'll talk to you.
>>
>>120183925
And I find it absolutely pathetic that you /a/utists are sucking moot's cock when no less than a month ago he had stickied "USUKA" memes on /a/. It's not at all. Have you ever browsed any of the boards? Just because the boards are both fast doesn't mean the userbase is the same. If anything, that implies the opposite since it would be harder for a single person to browse multiple fast boards. /a/ is very isolated from the latest 4chan memes and drama which makes it quite different from the other fast boards.

moot was a faggot, and I mean that. I really don't like him, he's a moron that did a bunch of stupid shit, not to mention he's a wannabe normie.

But he was like the dried cum that kept this place stuck together. Things will never be the same here without him.

I bet this is going to be the last straw for a lot of people. Whoever the new admin(s) is, it's bound to rub some people the wrong way. And they'll leave. Other chans will spring up, and preexisting chans will get bigger. I'm sure there will be people who stay here, but not everyone.

And anyone who tries to say this isn't a big deal or that things won't change is a moron. When other chans have gone up and been made, it's been because of stupid petty e-drama, so of course they didn't have a huge effect on the site. Something like this, a change of ownership and administration, has obviously never happened. This is a turning point in the entire site's culture, for better or for worse. From now on 4chan's history will be defined as "moot" and "post-moot". In a few years, you'll see threads where people talk about being here when moot was here, and deriding the "post-moot" newfags. I'm sure 4chan will still be around for years, but it will never be the same again. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen.

Having said all that:

It's been real niggas. I hate you all, and love you all. Every faggot on every board. Shitposters of every stripe. I'll always remember this place, and won't forget about you.

The problem was that this was a post on /meta/ by an overexcited /v/irgin, where they decided it would be 'helpful' to spam that stupid COME TO INFITITY picture all over the place, making everyone think 8/a/ supported it. I hate them with a burning passion, they quite possibly screwed the only real chance we had to finally set up a new fast /a/ board. Now 8ch is on the same level as anontalk in the eyes of most of the userbase, shit sucks.

I post here for my large board needs and on a smaller chan when I want a cozy place where everybody knows my name.

Most of the bullshit in the last year hasn't affected /a/ though, at least not yet. /a/ may be on the decline but it's still a serviceable platform for anime discussion and easily the best place for anime discussion in the west. Not to mention possibly being the best board on the site right now.

/moe/ isn't so bad as long as you can get over the fact that some of them throw fits over lewd images.

Both moe and meguca are much much smaller than anything you'll find on 4chan though. It's a completely different experience. Small boards are good in addition to /a/, but they aren't good replacements.
>>
>>120187013
>But the last safeguard is gone and the usual cycle of nepotism will begin
I never actually thought about that, but you're right for as stubborn as he was with the userbase he was the same with the mods, nothing they said could ever influence him. It could end badly, as I recall the senior community manager was Rapeape, so we're in for a fun time.
>>
>>120187038
>there are other /a/s out there even if 4chan goes down.
This single moderately fast off-topic thread is faster than any given one of them, and faster than almost all of them combined.

I browse about 20 threads here at a given time, and even that is slowish for me. Each one of those threads is faster than entire boards elsewhere.

That and there's no AppchanX-alike that I know of that works on other chans. I'm too comfy here, far too comfy.

All the oldfags left this site back in like 2009 anyways and has been replaced by a steady supply of redditors since. Moot gave up years ago, this is just him officially giving up. I would be interested to see how many people have stuck through with this site after all these years.
>>
>>120187338
Never because the site will be dead by then.
>>
>>120181014
Pretty certain he isn't selling it, he's just not running it at all.

I think even moot knows that there aren't very many people who can be trusted to be the "owner" of the site, and I'm willing to bet that not many of the those trustworthy, competent people even want to potentially be publicly associated with this site.

I give 4chan another 10 or 15 years, when the current generation of administrating mods will want to move on, and then the site will either actually face extinction or be unusably shit for the people who regulared here pre-2008/people who actually understand 4chan's culture and what makes it good.

Unless you like having conversations with yourself, none of them will ever be fast enough to be able to efficiently waste every day of your life browsing them 24/7 like /a/ is. >>
>>120187231
>>120187231
Exactly. My fear isn't in the board suddenly dropping tomorrow. It's in a repeat of the downfall of SA, with a slow takeover of the administration staff (or a coup that takes mere minutes, happens) by replacing outgoing members with friends and cohorts. Soon they have enough cronies to do what they want with impunity and they simply mold 4chan as they see fit. Facebook integration, the end of anonposting, anything.

That's what scares me.
>>
>>120187444
I want to know if these people will have a face or will they be completely anonymous and have no presence. I think 4chan will die if it's the latter since all the bad blood will just build up and lead to more and more shitposting. Mods should be anonymous but there is so much shit right now someone also needs to fix the relationship with the userbase before it pops.
>>
>>120187338
Not him but, I remember the banning lolis fiasco but I didn't know the mods name. Is he really still a mod?

My point was you, I, and everyone else here will go there to try it out, either out of habit or desperation, and it'll slowly but surely make its way back to 4chin status. Even if we have to endure the slow migration process for a month or so.

Again, this place would have to die first though, /a/ is stubborn enough to hang around even if their chair was on fire.
>>
>>120186757
m8, everything has changed.

This isn't some stupid e-drama that pops up once a year where people swear off 4chan and go to another chan for a few minutes before coming back (e.g. /b/ day, chanology, /pol/ and /r9k/ being deleted, gamergate, etc.) moot is leaving. 4chan will continue to exist, but 4chan as you know it is dead.
>>
>>120187722
>you, I, and everyone else here will go there to try it out, either out of habit or desperation, and it'll slowly but surely make its way back to 4chin status
I went there out of desperation and the first thing I saw on their /a/ was how Attack on Titan was a masterpiece and how we hate it because we're "anime pros"

That and their haffchan meme makes me deeply mistrust what's clearly an undercurrent of faggotry that might not ever get fixed.

I thought this at first, but the fact is it simply doesn't happen. There was one time I recall that a board got sick of its mods, and in the space of a few hours had entirely migrated to a different board, but there was only ever one instance of that. Anons tend to stay put unless there's something seriously wrong with the mods, everyone has a very strong bias against balkanisation, both here and over there. Keep in mind, 8ch has been ticking along for the past 5 months now, I'm convinced at this point it's going to be a permanent fixture of the web, or at least for many years to come.

wait what's the logic behind this? So what if someone makes drama and makes a new board if he can't grow a user base because he's the one doing the drama. I'm giving my honest opinion, I really hate how everything is labelled 'shill' these days, I legitimately think it's our best bet for a replacement board, IF we could actually go there as a group. The site guarantees good moderation that reflects the community, it's the best system for a chan I know of so far.

8 is quite a bit different though. 3-8 was just scientology shit, 8 is like 4 back when it had /l/ and /guro/, but now also with /i/.

It's also difference a difference in governing. The former was a traditional imageboard with top-down control of boards, the latter lets anyone start boards and has almost no top-down moderation from the domain admins. In other words, it can function semi-autonomously even if the owner goes AFK, so long as funds keep up and the bill is paid. If there's a demand for a new board, it can be created.
>>
>>120194567

Occasionally I get desperate for human interaction and turn on grindr, so that I can have someone pretend to care about me for a night. I'm not even gay, but I literally don't have the social skills to do anything else.

We'll spend the rest of our lives grasping at the fragments of our dreamlike past, trying desperately to recreate the castle we built up--a castle that was simultaneously disgusting and beautiful, and undoubtedly unique beyond measure--but it'll never be the same. We'll have to make do with our memories, which will grow fainter and fainter with time... But we'll never truly forget, for better or for worse, because this place is truly unforgettable. We'll suffer because of it, because it's likely nothing will ever be as grand and glorious as 4chan was, but it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all, right?

I think /moe/ isn't that slow, but it's not really like /a/, it's more of a circlejerk than anything http://doushio.com/moe/2535619 - at any rate it's not for me.

I think that we've been spoiled by the speed of /a/, on the actually slow chans out there you can spend days waiting for a reply, 8ch/a/ you won't instantly get hundreds of responses but you will get _something_. lainchan is completely dead, which is a shame because I actually liked the cyberpunk-centric aesthetic of the site as a whole.

I'm saving the waterworks though, I'm not going to let the tears really flow unless this site is completely raped by new admins/corporate takeover or some shit which I seriously doubt will happen.
Or I mean if Moot actually DID die, I'd probably shed a tear for him, he deserves that from me at least.
>>
>>120198225
He's not going to be involved in controlling the mods anymore, which I think is going to be the key failing. If he's gone that means Rapeape is going to be set free to do whatever he wants, we're going to be trading one dictator for something potentially far worse. If nothing else, moot was incorruptible, nobody could ever influence him, he'd make up his mind and that would be that. Now there's a hole in that structure, and given Rapeape's history I'm not convinced it's not going to be a problem.
>>
>>120198375
I've been holding myself back relatively alright. Shed a few, but the passage of time for shit I care about, especially in big lunges, is something that always makes me heavily melancholic.
