The problem is, Japanese animators back then were much more open to outside influences and pop culture from all over the world. Now, the anime industry has become so insular. The only people who take the time to actually make it are the ones who have zero interests outside of it so they just make anime based on their tastes. The industry needs to look outward and open themselves up to more interests than just anime or they'll just continue to stagnate. There are gems and exceptions now. Yeah, the pacing is Tomino. Action packed start; dull, uninteresting middle and... well, the climax of the TV show was a mess, but you are right that Be Invoked was a massive improvement on the whole thing. I'm still not sure the time investment was worth it, but I guess it's a classic the way Mark Twain described: "A classic a book that everyone wants to have read, but no one wants to actually read."

With mecha it seems the trend was from a monster of the week terrestrial defense story, with 0079 starting a trend of more military-minded mecha that would persist through the 80s.

The 90s, I've heard conflicting arguments that the mecha genre was carried by the Yuusha franchise, or Eva.

The 00s had a trend toward reviving old 70s properties (though I guess that started in 1997 with Getter Robo Armageddon), with stuff like Mazinkaiser, the other Getter OVAs (good lord New Getter is 11 years old now) Kotetsushin Jeeg, Daiku Maryu Gaiking, and shoutouts like TTGL.

I wonder how this decade will be looked back on for mecha.
