You have to realize that Kadokawa is pandering towards both sides with Kancolle and with all the official works.

As long as you don't try and force the yuri then the people here will not mind but as soon as you try and deny the het side you will get a backlash. Part of the reason the backlash is so strong is because of yurispammer and his deeds of months ago.

They're probably not going to show the Admiral in the anime for the same reason they don't show the Admiral or any mention of gender in the game, so you can insert however you like.
