Harem anime needs to learn to be funny and still do writing well.

Completely 1 dimensional characters are a crippling weakness. It worked out for a while and spawned some funny anime here and there but it just wont cut it forever. 'Dense MC' is a super common and super effective example of this shit being at it's worst.

For example Ichika from Infinite Stratos is, apparently, 90% fucking sexually and emotionally dead.

Yeah, he gets embarrassed and blushes and spills spaghetti. People aren't that simple though. It doesn't just work like that. It makes no sense that a guy his age surrounded by beautiful women who all want to support him wouldn't fall in love and have an interest in one himself. Ichika should have died of blue balls over all the abuse he's been put through at the very least. How he manages to dodge developing a romantic attachment is silly.

It also makes no sense that aside from humor it seems like his character has 0 leanings when it comes to what he likes from the girls. He's completely free of fetishes and desires of that nature whenever it's not a siscon joke it seems. Come the fuck on. At least make it an interesting one. Infinite Stratos would be more entertaining by far if Ichika had turned out to be a closet sadist.

There is plenty wrong with how typical harem tropes go for the girls too but if the MC is bad than the girls being shit just makes sense.

Archetypes and cliche's are fine, but the problem is that they can become really bogged down by key elements in a show. Take a page from Tenchi Muyo. Tenchi is the densest mother fucker to ever exist, he's so dense he's a literal singularity wrought out of sheer improbability that has three conceptual deities on his dick. That is dense. But you don't really feel it watching Tenchi Muyo, because for the most part the harem aspect of the harem series focuses on the harem itself, rather than male protagonist. Tenchi and his status as some combination of Luke Skywalker, King Arthur and Neo combined don't really have much baring on the harem or the show itself. If you have cute girls that play well with one another you can shove the plot and MC-kun to the side and still have an enjoyable series.
