Sometimes I wonder if the people who say Haruhi is just a bitch watched the anime or just missed the point for some reason. The whole anime revolves on Haruhi's struggle with reality. She has insane supernatural powers, but she doesn't know and can't know. She wants to see aliens, espers and time travelers but knows that they don't exist -when they actually do but that's another matter-. Kyon is her polar opposite, he's a total cynicist, the consciousness of the SOS Brigade and the one who makes Haruhi open her eyes to look at the world around her instead of being an egotistical cunt. It goes the other way too, Haruhi helps Kyon to get out of the comfort zone, to seek and try new interesting things. They're two sides of the same coin, and while they don't like to admit it, they're fascinated by each other and their relationship is one of trust, recognition and love (platonic and romantical). Just as Haruhi says in the God knows song, their ways converge. That's Haruhi in a nutshell and that's why she seems like a cunt in the beginning, because she's obnoxious while Kyon is the silent type. She still hadn't found her balance.
