I think they'll get to a point where good 3D (or other CG) looks about identical to hand-drawn, and then we might not care so much anymore about how shitty CG in anime is. That point isn't today, but it looks like it's at least visible on the distant horizon.

For the moment though it looks like the pool of anime industry 3D people is a mixed bag of skill levels/capabilities, with many of them obviously sucking shit, but still getting hired because of probably several things - maybe there aren't too many to go around yet, maybe people at some studios think that all the 3D guys are roughly the same in capability, and it just hasn't been around long enough yet for there to be big names emerging who are obviously way more talented/have a much better feel for how to apply it for anime than the others. With time that may happen though.

As was pointed out in Shirobako, for 3D artist to really be good, there needs the same kind of eye for movement, sense of weight etc in animation that any 2D animator would have. The rift currently existing is probably in place in good part due to the 3D-using people just aren't trained like that at all and hence approach it from a different perspective. With time some talent may emerge though since it is already clear that most people suck at it for the anime feel, but a few people are actually not too shabby.

They can start by dropping all attempts to appear anything at all like hand drawn animation.
Pixar and friends do well enough because they go out of their way to avoid the second uncanny valley.

I can't stand it when they lower the framerates down to try to look like hand-drawn, when it really just looks like a laggy console game because unlike 2D which can slow down / speed up key frames for emphasis/movements etc, in 3D it is just the exact same thing it would have been, only choppy.

I wonder if someday someone will actually get in timing of freezes to actually look like 2D, would to do it right would need in-betweens, which would introduce a whole new dimension to how the models are approached and hence would require a lot more time / effort than it does now, to look (quite ironically) shittier than it could in order for it to actually look like anime.
