I always say to just watch it. I strongly disagree with most people about the first 20-25 episodes because I liked many of them. There are certainly some duds throughout the series, there are whole arcs that I pretty much hated but when you're marathoning you can quickly move past them and on to the next episodes. We have one probably 15+ chapter serious arc guaranteed, which means we also have a buffer of 40+ comedy chapters guaranteed. Also, he's said he won't end Gintama until Madao is redeemed, so him and some other characters are probaby gonna get some semi serious mini arcs before or after to resolve their character arcs. Overall if he is planning on ending it we've probably got another 2 years or so guaranteed until that happens.

There's just too many puns and wordplay based humor that not even the best translators can properly convey.
