That is only the case for a pretty short period of human history. After the explosion of primitive warfare a bit after neolithic revolution until the birth of modern human rights.

When you look at earliest civilizations women were not property at all. In ancient Persia or Egypt they had more rights than in XIXth century Europe or USA. In primitive cultures like Amazonian Indians they often have more rights than average male.
