I prefer to read an episodic synopsis on shows I'm interested in from wikipedia and anime blogs, then draw my interpretation of the scenes based on what I read with crayons and blue line paper, then flip through it like a flipbook. In my opinion it is vastly preferable to both downloading and streaming.

It's an unnecessarily heavy piece of software that runs into codec issues way too often despite touting it's versatility. I've used it on other people's computers and the interface is pretty shit too. There's no way to change the hotkeys, the volume controls are super touchy and extremely easy to hit by accident.

I recently gave a friend a softsubbed copy of pm3 Rebellion and VLC wouldn't display the subs even when they were turned on in the settings.

Windows computers ship with a better media player.

MPC-HC of course. Best quality playback for anime if you use windows.

Current logo.

Also, VLC isn't bad software, people just misuse it by treating it like a default media player for anime, it's much better used as a network streaming program.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Probably one of these:

1. You have some other codec or plugin installed that's fucking it up.
2. By some weird happenstance you happened to download weird files that it doesn't work with, I've had this happen very rarely where I sometimes get files I can't get subtitles to appear in screenshots, but it works 99% of the time for the hundreds of episodes I've watched with this setup.
3. Your player isn't using xy-subfilter as its subtitle renderer because you forgot to disable the built-in renderer in the main playback settings.

literally my only complaint with VLC, and my research says they will explicitly never enable such a function. I like mpv for OS X. Just install it with homebrew, then do "brew linkapps mpv" and it functions like a normal application (in the /Applications/ folder and can double click a movie file to open it).

I used to use MPlayerX but the speed up option never worked right and subs messed up a few times for me.

I'm sorry it took me so long to find it, it's been forever since last I watched it, the 90s to be more specific. And by watch I mean draw then flip through. Sure enough though, after some digging I found my original copy that I made all those years ago. In the 90s.

It's absolutely insane. Dev team explicitly stated that won't be enabled, one example here:

https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/2024

I'm gonna take some advice from this thread and jazz up MPC for a daily driver. Goodbye vlc, you won't be missed.

Well I can understand it from the dev point of view because VLC is more useful for other things besides marathoning anime. I use it as a network streamer to connect to various livestreaming sites so I can bypass the shitty flash players they use. It works pretty great for that.

For anime playback though, I love MPC.
