Were westaboo shows just a passing fad of the nineties?
>>
>>118261528
I'd say they're more of a rarity that has and will continue to show up every few years. Look at PSG, for example.
>>
Nah, they were always there until recently. The "fad" is otaku pandering.

Now I feel old. This is not a new thing at all but is decades old.
>>
It's a shame it didn't have more momentum. The hybrid of western fiction elements and Japanese design and sentiments produces a lot of great stuff.
>>
>>118261528
>Passing fad
I don't know if it's a "westaboo" thing, but modern anime still contains a shitton of references to American, British, French and German culture. Especially German for some reason.
>>
>>118262658
That's because everything sounds cooler in German, according to Japs
>>
>>118262658
>Especially German for some reason

Don't be cute, anon.
>>
>>118262658
Outside of WWII, Japan had acquired a lot of their foreign influences from Germany whether it be philsophy, medicine, or industry. American references are due to american media spread and us remaining from coldwar. British and French are bit more of a stereotypical European nation type of thing. France is a symbol of fine living while Britain is a nation of mysteries.
>>
You're a louse, Roger Smith.
>>
Tiger and Bunny.
>>
Nah, such anime being popular with western audiences was a passing fad of the 90s

I agree with this, but they did seem more frequent in the mid to late nineties...

BIG O
>>
>>118265229
They were definitely there in the 80s too. Look at stuff like Gunbuster or Dirty Pair, there are loads of not only Western sci-fi references, but just plain Western pop culture references.

>live in Japan
>see how beautifully shibuya-kei romanticizes Paris
>versus the real thing

Seriously man. It's crazy how badly Japanese people get it wrong.
>>
>>118270189
I heard on QI that the Japanese embassy in Paris actually has a department to deal with Japanese tourists who show up and have their unrealistic expectations crushed. Not sure if it was true.
>>
>>118270276
Yeah, there's a 24/7 hotline for Japanese tourists suffering for Paris Syndrome.
>>
Space Dandy is westaboo pandering and it was perfect for what it was and I loved it.

Westaboo crops up from time to time, and sometimes turns out to be pretty damn awesome.

How much was Stan Lee actually involved in that?
>>
>>118272381
He wrote the manga series, so I would say he was fairly involved.
>>
>>118272381
He was part of the cast.
>>
>>118272323
And look how unpopular it is. It's in a tiny magazine abd the volumes don't sell for shit.

It's a real shame.

Fuck Westaboos and the invaders whose dicks they suck.
>>
>>118262658

During the Meiji Restoration Japan sent out people to modern countries to study their methods and technology. When they returned they helped Japan modernize in an extremely short period of time. This left a mark on modern Japanese culture. For example the boys gakuran school uniform is based on Prussian military uniforms.
>>
>>118272691
And now they just save effort and import foreigners to come teach at their schools.
>>
>>118261528
Didn't Space Dandy just come out?
>>
>>118261528
I which we get more Westaboo shows they are always good

Could we call Shingeki no Bahamut westaboo?
>>

Similar values. They're the only Western nation whose general population the Japanese don't consider stupid unlike burgers, bongs, and croissants.

Not with the necrololi and titty demon
>>
>>118273198
Bebop is westaboo, and that had a loli and titties

Bebop's setting is more westaboo than Bagamut's

Jojo is westaboo as fuck, yet it's one of the most popular things ever in Japan.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but that isn't Master Keaton is it?

How is Gunbuster Western? I thought it was about Japanese nationalism.

but literally everyone in Japan enjoys western media to some extent. they might be insular but not THAT insular. mere references are to be expected.
>>118273317
according to Monkey Punch's own words from the Mamo DVD booklet, Lupin III was specifically made with the intent of not being typically Japanese. and lo and behold it's fucking huge in Japan.

hope the new anime won't suck like Fujiko!
>>
>>118261528
Yes.
>>
>>118275951
Which is why I find it strange that he's played by a jap in the live action movie.
I mean, they can do what they want to, but I never pictured Lupin like that.
More in line with a Jean Dujardin type.
>>
>>118278505
You find an actor fluent in Japanese that isn't Japanese.
>>
>>118261528
It wasn't even a fad, it was always niche as fuck.
>>
>>118272323
The threads were mostly dead.

>Were westaboo shows just a passing fad of the nineties?
We did have Panty & Stocking in 2010 and Space Dandy last season I think.
>>
>>118278531
Maybe some australian?
There must be a few that come over to Japan, because they don't have dropbears there.
>>
>>118273167
I don't think the japs consider the british and the french stupid, they consider them more eccentric
>>
Isn't that new "western style" Jump manga Academia something gaining popularity?
