what you have to understand is that Kill la Kill shift at the midway point really brought it down. It was a fun ride much like gurren lagan but at the same time it hit the same problem. The second half made it mediocre. It's fun to watch once but I couldn't see myself watching it again.

I liked how it kept 1iupping itself, it started out ridiculous but it just kept climbing that mountain right past insanity into pure glory. I usually hate any anime with those stupid >_< half faces, I didn't even watch FLCL because of them, but KlK made them worth it.

The original build for the show had conservative outfits and the only reason they switched to the skimpy ones was they had the idea that they would get a lot of cosplayer girls to get naked. I guess for me, at least Gurren Lagann remained visually appealing to look at, I thought the final battle was interesting, and the soundtrack was good - it made up for how lackluster the plot became. Kill la Kill just became worse and worse to look at, the second half's soundtrack was totally forgettable, and the final battle was eh at best so it made the plot impossible to ignore.

It was still a fun ride, I enjoyed watching the streams with /a/ but unlike GL I probably wouldn't spontaneously rewatch it.

The cities' reputations aren't that obscure that people wouldn't get that it was a big send-up, are they? I think it just fell at a weird place in the story. It's supposed to be the climax of Satsuki's conquest but Ragyo tripping neon signs blaring "I AM THE MAIN VILLAIN" undermined the whole thing. I wouldn't lump Madoka in with those because the typical anime clownery was totally absent from it. It succeeds as a serious work, at least in my opinion.

Likewise, at least the first cour of Kill La Kill made light of its own silliness. I think it lost touch with that in the second cour and became something worthy of the criticism it receives here.

It doesn't stop a huge number of people from praising it wildly and raising a big scene about it on the internet. It's pretty annoying, but there's no need to get upset about their "shitty opinions". It's just entertainment.

I figured this show was a shounen and understood that--it was fun, but it was nothing profound. It basically did what it was supposed to, and for that it's a good show. However, I think it's hard to say that it has any merit beyond its "fun" aspect.
