Shinsekai Yori is trash though, obscurantism over reductionism is always bad, ostentatious subplots and shallow characters. Definitely among the most overrated anime of the decade. Tatami Galaxy is unquestionably the best original anime of the last 4 years.

Kaiba is just... I dunno, kinda boring. it has a great Tezuka-esque art style but I couldn't get all that emotionally involved in it. I honestly had more fun with the episodic storytelling in Casshern Sins than the stuff in Kaiba.

The first episode most definitely; there was a quality of kinetic frenzy and violence to the animation that just kills me. Kaiba was at its strongest when it embraced an episodic format, through the first 7 episodes or so. Its been a few years but I just remember the world building blowing me away in a fashion that hasn't been replicated in anime since.

I prefer TTG but Shinsekai Yori is pretty high up there as well. Amazing atmosphere, OST, storytelling, interesting and likeable protagonist, nice background visuals, some great horror moments. 9/10

It's moreso that it was so abstract and unlike anything else I've ever seen that I don't really know if I could bring myself to give it a rating.

Don't get me wrong, I quite enjoyed it. Heck if anything it might have hit a little too close to home in some parts. I was incredibly depressed when I first watched it, So the part where the old man explains the things that give him happiness in the whales belly really changed my perspective on things.

it was one of my first anime movies and it wasn't that bizarre; it wasn't even much more 'out there' than something like FLCL in that regard. just went a little more nuts with the visuals and had less pretty designs.

the story was also very basic and had a message that's been delivered many times before; it just felt extremely sincere and inspiring here because you could tell Nishi's story was a very personal one (reminder that the manga author is named Robin Nishi)
