Here's what I think might be going on:
Lavalley is behind everything, he is a demon and also Amira's father. The reason he wants to release the bahamut is not to end the world, but to make Amira the ruler/savior/legendary knight. It may have to do with bringing peace between demons and angels, perhaps since she's a half breed and his lover would have been an angel, so. I also think Martinet rigged the gate portal so Azazel wouldn't be able to exchange info with Lucifer. He might have expected it would result in Azazel storming the caste and making enough ruckus in which Amira would be easier to kidnap and taken to Helheim.

YNVH is overpowered. Putting him in a story as active element is asking for trouble.

i think the deal with pic related is that he is going to engineer bahamut's destruction using amira.

he knows the angels are fucking useless because they just want to keep bahamut bottled up. and he knows the demons are trouble because they are after the god key as well. maybe they forgot their history lesson after 2000 years and think they can control that big fucker or have some trick up their sleeves that they think will let them use its power somehow.

but this guy knows better. the angels are doomed to fail, and if the demons wake up bahamut, they will get rekt along with the rest of the world.

so now it is a race to see who can get the two keys. he gave amira the power of angels and demons and programmed her with her mission to get the keys because he wants to unseal bahamut. unlike the angels, he knows that big fucker cannot be contained; and unlike the demons, he knows it cannot be controlled. so the only way to insure that the fire and brimstone of 2000 years ago does not happen again is to destroy the final boss.

this guy knows that someone has to shove some magical sword into final boss's head. his visage has appeared as amira's stand twice, so maybe taking on bahamut like we see in the OP is amira's final task once she retrieves the demon's key from helheim.

but things go wrong as they usually do, and amira gets caught stealing the god key and gets btfo by michael and the demons. so he drops by presumably to assess the situation and lend a hand if necessary. he will find out about her traveling companions and somehow get them to help her. rita and kaiser probably will not need convincing, but he will bullshit favaro somehow into the position of the chosen one. they set out to help amira complete her mission. when it comes time for the final fight, some serious shit will go down, favaro will sacrifice himself and amira will shank bahamut for good.

tl;dr: amira is the hero. or am i full of shit?
