It's far more palatable to the common consumer; anyone with half a brain can tell Jin-Roh faces are ugly, meanwhile anime of pseudo-Disney faces gets some popularity

Outside of some movies (Jin-Roh or Satochi Kon) Anime dont want realistic characters.
Japanses faces are objectively ugly and make people look creepy, there's no reason to have them in a medium which relies on the idea of perfection so much.

The only director that had the balls to air japanese looking people in anime is Satoshi Kon.
