Oh thank god, finally a thread I can ask this in. Not even secondary, it's just always bugged me.

How in the fuck can she tell when someone calls her "Tiger" as opposed to her first name? The two are absolutely, 100%, indisputably the same pronunciation in their Nippy moonspeak. I even listen to the scene in the VN where she falls over and the students wake her up. They all say "Taiga" but the translation and her reaction indicate they said "Tiger." No way she can tell. Why not just use Tora as her nickname so it makes some goddamn sense?

It's actually not quite pronounced the same. Her name is Taiga. Tiger is "taigaa". The difference is subtle, but it's there. It's the same sort of thing as that scene where Shirou tries to get Rider to correctly pronounce his name with the extended vowel sound at the end. It seems like such a small thing, but it's noticeable to native speakers.
