How much does Shonen Jump pay its more popular mangaka (i.e. author of Death Note)?
>>
about 746 dollars
>>
Nothing
>>
a gorillion yen
that's about $5
>>
>>114503913
even less than an €uro?
>>
I was under the impression that it really is very little, but does anyone have any realistic figures? Just curious because they write exciting/enjoyable stories but somehow get paid shit. Does Shonen Jump simply make massive profits/operate on very high margins?
>>
Oligatory "bout tree fiddy" post.
>>
>>114504053
Japan has very high taxes and very low pay, so they have a very low quality of life. That's why so many Japanese commit seppuku. In America we have lower taxes and fewer seppukus.
>>
Don't they all sign a contract in which they lose the copyright to their own creations?
>>
>>114504053
Oda makes about 20 million USD, annually for One Piece, but that's merchandising, volume sales, etcetera.
Togashi only draws one chapter annually, so he might make less than some of Jumps less poplar authors.
>>
>>114504310
How much does Kishimoto makes?

Yeah I found out about Oda's earnings, which are still surprisingly low for something that's basically read as a newspaper.

But I also imagine he's an incredible outlier, like would other popular mangaka on the top 20 list only make 1/20th of his income I guess?
>>
>>114503867
this is correct
>>
>>114503856
Akira Toriyma was getting paid about $500 per page of dragon ball at peak popularity
>>
>>114504839

Wow considering how popular dragon ball is and the hours that go into writing it, that's really not much.
>>
>>114506001
That's just what he was making per page, he was definitely making millions out of royalties.
>>
>>114504296
lol'd.

I was under the impression that they earned money mostly through merch and not their actual drawings. But I might be wrong. I suppose it depends on who we're talking about.
>>114504304
How do you think doujinshi get away with using other people's characters, anon?
>>
From what I understand page rates themselves haven't changed since the 60s

I suppose. I guess it works a similar way for books and movies in the U.S.

Does anyone have any idea how much a good (top 10-20) manga might make all in? Again, Oda is obvious a humongous outlier looking at his volume sales.
>>
>>114511263
There is really not much info about their payment out there. Most of them are reclusive as fuck anyway, try to find pictures of mangaka. We basically know nothing about them
>>
>>114504780
lmao, is this for real?
>>
>>114511263
manga artists get a 10% royalty percentage of the volumes of their manga sold.
a volume is about 400-500 yen
get the number of volumes of their manga sold that year and multiply that by 40 yen and you have an estimate

I believe the same royalties apply to merchandising and such. so they should get royalties for products as well.
>>
>>114511944

No clue I never watched Bleach filler. I wouldn't be surprised though.

>>114511987

Okay that's definitely helpful, I guess I'll assume they get 10% royalties on the merchandising as well then.
>>
>>114512601
Put it this way, the pay is only really bad if you write an unpopular manga. The popular mangakas get a pretty good wage.

I was more curious to compare their earnings to that of successful authors/writers in the West.
>>
>>114512853
I would think considerably less but I don't have numbers. Sorry, bud.
>>
Oda gets paid 2 biliion yen (25 million dollars) in anything One Piece-related.
>>
>>114504310
Togashi probably makes much more. You are forgetting this is the same man that is still in the top 10 despite being a lazy sack of shit.
Also he is an editor at Shueisha and his contract with them regarding HxH probably means he gets paid more for tanks, merchandise, and other shit.

Oda was small time before OP, Togashi wasn't and also he was pissed with Shueisha regarding YYH so they had to give him some forms of incentives to stay.
>>
>>114503856
1 billion yen
>>
>>114514306
Oh and by the way I'm not saying he makes more than Oda.
I am saying he probably makes more money then the other writers at Jump. Maybe even more than Kishi but I don't shit about that.

It's free advertising. They don't make alot of money in the first place. Not everyone is Disney.
>>
The most popular SJ series have crazy amounts merchandise and even if the mangaka only receives a small fraction, that's still a lot. That's also on top of whatever SJ pays them directly.
>>
All I know is Oda makes millions annually, but One Piece is stupidly popular so it's not fair to compare Oda to the others.
>>
>>114514547
That's kind of what I was saying to that other anon.

Yeah really I was hoping to figure out how much authors like the guys who E21 or Death Note make. Guess I'll have to do my own back of the envelope calculations.

I don't care.

How was Eye Shield? I never got all that far and I'm in the mood for some sports comics.

Easily the greatest sports comic of all time. You won't regret it just keep going. Starts out okay and eventually becomes your drug.

And no one cares about your shitpost.

>>114503856
a birrion
>>
>>114504839
That's really not that much. A lawyer can make like $250 per hour. Can you churn out a page of Dragonball every two hours?
>>
>>114503856
Like musicians and a lot of other artists, they make a little bit of a whole lot.
