Specifically when she calls Shidou a "human who's trying to trick me."

Though, if you really think about it, that doesn't quite make sense in the current story. Why would Inverse Tohka be wary of humans if she never came in contact with them? If she still has regular Tohka's memories but is filled with negative emotion shouldn't she still recognize Shidou then? She's either a amnesiac instinctive destructive force or a reflection of Tohka's darker thoughts, she can't be both.

The original version of the spirits would be much akin to child soldiers in a war-torn country who have committed plenty of atrocities due to being forced into the role.

Right on track there dude! Quite a few of the odd inconsistencies in DaL can be put in this severe toning down as the Author was going for heavier story setting. The other can be put on the fact that, because of DaL popularity, the story has been stretched way past the original plan of 10 Volumes.

If a bear mauls a group of tourists because one moron decided to throw rocks at it does that make the bear "inherently evil"? In this original scenario mankind would've almost assuredly fired the first shot to cause said spirits to begin raging in the first place. Hell this scenario is left intact in the final draft with Tohka attacking the AST to defend herself as well as causing minor property damage (the spacequake caused the rest) and being labeled "evil" and a target to be eliminated because she endangers humanity. The point is that she's not and she deserves a second chance because all she's ever known is being attacked by strange girls flying through the sky and could learn to co-exist peacefully with humanity if given the opportunity to. The original scenario would've just taken off all the silly training wheels and have her actually attacking what she perceives as the enemy and being the source of the catastrophe herself rather than some odd space-time phenomenon.

Re-read Vol07 and focus on the part that Tohka remembers Shidou. They are the same person but in a heavily altered state of mind. As for the devil they wield you must also remember that THAT part is something they took from outside of them (And something Wescott is way too inerested in..) as Tohka once again remembered in Vol10 that taking that external power had very hard consequences on everything so she chose "to remain herself" at that time.

I think they were just worried about characters being liked/hated so much. Obviously it doesn't matter to most though (see: Kurumi) but you can tell they try to keep spirits away from doing anything... wrong or bad. for example, Kurumi in her volume was shown killing people who did bad things, rather than showing her slaughter innocent people. That's the worst part of the theory. The Spirit he may have fallen in love is very probable to have died in the hands of DEM's experimentation at the time Woodman (and Ellen's sister) was still with the company. After seeing the error of their ways and no longer begin able to see the Spirits as objects(*) he took the closest members of his team with him and left DEM for good.

Precisely. Just look at Tohka's popularity and haw many covers/votes she has in proportion to DaL. Would have she been liked this much had the story advanced as intended? Maybe or maybe not but the fact remains that DaL become much more acceptable to the general audiences because of the lighter tone it took.

Kurumi's popularity is an odd case (at least for me) in that her design is certainly a hit well outside DaL sphere of influence despite her relatively small screen/LN time in the spotlight. Maybe hers is a case that could have worked with the original story as a difficult character to 'save' from her own twisted sense of justice. her dealings with Shidou under this setting could have been even more stark but oddly familiar as I think one of the reasons the Author uses her so little is to shield her away from Editor-san's influence.

I've been interested in reading the LN. Is it worth investing my time on them?
