I don't know why you would assume thast I would mean they were not favorites because I said I enjoy the shows on my 3x3. Most people enjoy their favorite things.

I do understand what you are referring to, I think it sometimes when I see other peoples 3x3 selections. If that is the way you feel however I can't say I have intentionally gone out of my way to select shows such that this effect might be achieved. They are all there for various combinations of reason and might have been enjoyed in different ways but still they are what I would at least call favorites. There are probably other things I could easily swap in but I am pretty happy with it.

Well, I just don't understand how certain choices could actually rise above mere appreciation to "favorite" status. Saying something is one of your favorites is a strong assertion. Horus, for example, I wouldn't think it particularly inaccurate to compare it to works like The Jazz Singer or Pamela that are recognized primarily for their historical importance. Sure, people enjoy them, but how many people do you see saying Jazz Singer or Pamela is one of their favorite works? Or maybe, given the director, my previous mention of picking Omoo when the same author wrote Moby-Dick could apply too.

On the other hand, Yoji Kuri shorts are mostly experimentation from the early days of animation, and here my diffficulty is mostly in imagining what qualities could make these kinds of shorts rise to superlative status. People tend to put Tsumiki no Ie over Iblard Jikan or 1001 Nights on 3x3s for a reason. In the same way, I find it hard to imagine how someone could pick something from Yoji Kuri over everything else that is out there. It feels like picking "A Trip to the Moon" when The General or Metropolis is out there.

I'm not quite sure how the 1960s qualify as the early days of animation given that there had been works being produced in Japan since the 1910s. A better parallel to draw surely would have been a silent animation by someone like Yasuji Murata in the 1920s. I just see it as experimental animation rather than early. Early in terms of the development of the anime industry maybe but not so much in terms of the development of the Japanese animation industry.

In the same way that the 17th and 18th centuries count as the "early days" of the novel even if there were many proto-novels and prose narratives that date to the Roman era. You can't really consider animation before Disney, or anime before Tezuka, comparable to what most people think of as animation today.

Disney was making animation in the 1920s so I am not really sure what you mean by that. With regards to tezuka however that is why I made a distinction between the anime industry and Japanese animation. Independent japanese animation really is for the most part something quite separate from anime. The point anyway is that Japanese animation did not start in the 1960s and it had 40 or so years of history prior to that.

That's true, but shorts like Tsumiki no Ie or Glassy Ocean also don't have much in common with mainstream TV/OVA anime of their period, and we call them "anime" anyways. So I don't see an issue in considering 1960s anime "early" even if we're talking about independent shorts. Tezuka, and the emergence of an anime industry, is a good dividing line for that kind of qualification, especially since the number of works produced only really picks up from the 60s. Each decade afterward easily dwarfs the amount of content produced in those first 40 years.

I believe the exception was based in referring to the 1960s as early in the history of animation but I think unless I am mistaken it is quite clear you meant anime rather than animation in general so that is quite agreeable. I am aware that independent animation is often referred to as anime but I think that is the result of a combination of factors such as general semantic laziness and most fans of anime only dabbling in the more well known shorts. I think in terms of both creative content and their commercial realities there is a real distinction between the two even without the semantic one always being made. There are of course though some works that blur those lines.
