>>113183836
I just started LoGH and the space fights piss me off so much, I don't know if they'll adress the technological side later on but right now it seems to aim for a somewhat realistic approach. This is not how any of this works, you don't just show up behind your enemy without being seen, you don't blow up an entire fleet without noticing the emitted light and particles from all the engines exploding.
>>113184364
Meh plot, good ending.

>>113184731
If you were fighting in space for 150 years+ you'd surely develop technology to detect those kind of jumps, right? Right?
>>113184814
The space combat in LoGH is meant to be reminiscent of the old line battles of the 17th-19th centuries. Don't take it too seriously.
Keep in mind: the plot forces them to do battle in corridors of space that will destroy them for nonsense reasons if they attempt to use the third dimension...
>>113184814
It's likely that you'd get observational technology at FTL before acquiring FTL technology for your ships.
>>113185074
I know, this is a space opera after all, I am enjoying it so far, don't get me wrong, but as a hard sci fi fan it still rubs me the wrong way.

>as a hard sci fi fan it still rubs me the wrong way
I'm with you man, it's kind of hard to ignore the stupid shit in it
>>113185235
I don't know why you would try to take logh space battles seriously at all. It's like star wars or star trek, you just enjoy it for what it is.

Assume for a moment that particles traveling at FTL is a real possibility.
People find out about this either by accident (discovering such particles) or by researching a theory that allows them to force particles to behave in this manner. If the former is the case, then they will only have to look out for particles that are moving at FTL anyway to gain FTL observation.
If the latter is the case then it is a question of how much you wish to move. A spaceship? Radiation or something very insubstantial (that might reflect of matter, and in effect be used like sonar)? Or swarms of mini-drones as seen used by Nagato in the Haruhi anime?
>>113186635
Patlabor is a hell of a drug
>>113185235
The script was written in like the 50's.
If you can't suspend disbelief on a few things, logh is gonna be a long, painful series.

Valkyria Chronicles has some really sexy weapons design. I like the concept of anti-tank lances, but I have no idea if it would work in real life.
Crazy tank designs were great too, like the Batomys, Marmota and Echidna.
Too bad Sega turned the franchise to shit.
>>113187025

>>113186688
I think I have to change my initial statement a bit, it depends on what type of ftl travel is used. You're describing one way, by changing existing particles into a new form, you're able to detect them before completing a ftl drive, otherwise you won't be able to develop it anyway. The other method is by entering a nother dimension, I think you shouldn't be able to interact(or detect traveling ships) with it because you're breaking the laws of physics this way. Detecting ships leave and enter those dimensions should work though, you still can't get ambushed unless they drop out next to you which is a horrible way to fight.
>>113186710
The Foundation Series was written in the 50's too and it still holds up well, age is not the issue. But I thought human interaction was the focus anyway, so disliking the space battles shouldn't be a problem
>>113187716
That looks like shit

>>113187932
Obviously just a mistranslation of tank.
>>113187867
Yeah, Patlabor is pretty great when it comes to realistic usage scenarios when it comes to mecha.
>>113187903

>>113187976
The first is just a grammar error, the second is a grammar error combined with a mistranslation which, out of pure coincidence, could mean they are driving their vehicle onto some container instead of that they are driving on top of their vehicle.
>>113186014
this god damn salt shaker was so ridiculous
>>113188133

>>113186710
The novels are from the 80s, are they based on something else even older ?
>>113187387
Cruel mindset you have there buddy, Democracy was invented centuries before christ and the very first steam based machines are from this era as well (except people didn't take interest in it).
Good ideas and progress aren't always following a straight line and you can overlook a lot of good stuff if you think like that.
Now don't blame its age, but blame the writer because even gundam has a valid explanation for why giant ships go unnoticed in space and why is there no internet (or any communication that doesn't look outdated).
>>113188133
>Being this guy
Patlabor is excellent about this stuff. Labors are extremely lightly armored and entirely inappropriate for most frontline combat usage, in fact the second movie opens with a UN team getting wrecked because they were being used like MBTs. Their main usage comes in construction work and the series follows a police team employing them.
>>113187861
>>113187932

I have that book too and have to say it's pure gold
>>113188186
>Democracy was invented centuries before christ
Are you saying democracy isn't horrible?
>>113188458
No idea, nothing to do with any of the series. The show is actually about a police unit that uses labors, but we do occasionally see the JGSDF labor unit that they have a rivalry with. Second movie features the most military hardware.
Absolute top-tier series, a must watch if you have even a passing interest in mecha.
>>113188616
I've watched the first few episodes; good shit indeed. Thanks for the tip on the second movie, I liked the episode with the JSDF trying to hunt down their escaped labor.
>>113188186
>Democracy was invented centuries before christ
Back then, democracy was something very different from what there is known as that nowadays.
>>113188694
Because back then the poor people who didn't get to vote lived directly next to the rich people who did get to vote.
>>113188640
To be honest I personally find the first movie more entertaining, a little heavier on the action and lighter on the Oshii directing in circles on philosophical topics. And of course there's two OVA series and a TV series, all of which are outstanding the whole way through.
And the in-progress live action sequel seriessubs NEVER

>>113187685

>>113189168
True, but in design that labor is closer to a tank than the humanoid ones more commonly seen.
Argevollen has been doing a rather fine job at portraying adequate combined use of mechs (save the disbelief-suspending knifefights), tanks, artillery (which is accurately portraied as one motherfucking scary death machine), and infantry.
P.S: The show's setting doesn't include any flying technology. Kinda the opposite of Pilot's Song in that regard.

Drive *onto* the container you mean.
Who knows, maybe it's a hollow mountain that they are scaling in a tank.

It may have been bad translation by the people that I was getting the fansubs from in the 1990s. But I understood that they did have FTL ships but NOT any sort of warp or transdimentional drive. Hence the "corridors" which were thin spots in either nebula or large belts of cosmic debris, which we now call "dark matter" that range in size from grains of sand to small boulders.
FTL ships cant go through the belts without shredding themselves in collisions with the the space debris. You can go around these fields, but it would literally require years of travel time and a war fleet of any significant size would run out of supplies.
This is also why the colonists who escaped Earth to found the Empire- and then centuries late those who escaped the Empire to found the free planets- both used giant ice ships, as the ice acted as ablative armor and absorbed the dark matter that they could not detect or move away from, and they just plowed through the dirty space

Had they not had to stop due to several stupid reasons they could have sped up their timetable by at the very least a few weeks, which would have evened up the timetable on their supplies and pushed them closer to, if not into Moscow.
How much good that would have done is debatable.
>>113212773
That's a bit stupid though, jamming technology doesn't make you magically undetectable. You can still detect the jammer, after all.

>>113214182
thats what happens when the game server slows down to 1/100th the normal speed (dispite being hard coded to go maximum of 1/10th)
during the fight there were ships being jumped in, warping in/out for 19 hours
>>113214339
in space even 1/100th speed is still ludicrous speed. i mean i get it's necessary, but it still looks stupid
>>113214416
well fastest ship ingame is about 32 AU/s (1AU = distance from the sun to earth)
and actually they added in warp in/ warp out effects a few months after that fight

>>113214334
>Focus on western theater
Probably not going to sell well then.
>Have World War 2, but not our World War 2
The Nips are pretty big on denying their own past, they may like a glorified WW2 but I feel like completly rewriting history is kinda hard. Going into a cold war setting with Nippon surrendering earlier and being allied to either America or the Sowjets sounds more plausible.
>>113214570
>32 AU/s
That's faster than light. I'm talking about combat speed, happening outside FTL
>>113214676
ahh well yeah, small scale fleet fights can have ships going average of 1.5-2 km/s
