Awesome, with all the hentai and yaoi we have to work on the Tezuka titles are a nice change of pace that everyone in the office likes. Right now I'm doing some work on Captain Ken and can't wait for it to be complete.

ROBOT was quite a bit before my time at the company but it was pretty much one of the reasons Wani hates us so I hear. Funny enough last week because we a have a number of extra copies of the first volume of ROBOT my boss gave me a copy and turns out it was signed by one of the artists.

>>112878434
I wish there was some kind of kickstarter for reprints/rescues where people could put in orders. Except for books rather than dollars.

The first goal would be getting the thing to print. Stretch goals would reduce the price of everyone's items down towards the marginal cost rather than adding goodies.

And yeah, anyone getting to order any number of copies, being open to both retailers and end customers.
>>
>>112878252
>Captain Ken
Looking forward to that one, it's the first Tezuka I've bought with no prior knowledge of it at all. Still waiting on The Crater from another Kickstarter, hope the biggest issue is just lots of delays.

Haven't bought any of the digital titles or the hentai yet, neither plunge is one I'm quite up to, though I do enjoy many of the series you have available.
There's no chance of Sweet Blue Flowers, Kimagure, or King of Extreme Cooking going physical, is there?

>>
>>112878725
Sounds like an interesting idea, could try and talk with some coworkers about it. Bit ambitious though.

>>112878821
Yeah unfortunately there is no chance of our DMG titles becoming print as quoted from my boss.

But yeah prices are rather steep being a bit of an understatement in my opinion for the digital titles. The hentai we have been coming out with is some nice stuff, lots of cowtits in our catalog but we have started venturing into more unique genres. Some legal choices that have been made I disagree with but upper management makes their own decisions.

>>112878864

Long term goals into the future with Tezuka titles look bright. We are trying to space kickstarters accordingly so as to not fatigue people with them but the president really does want to see his whole library published.

>>
>>112879180
>ambitious
Well, yeah. I don't expect it to work without a rich madman at the helm.

There are plenty of details to fill in, but I see it as some manner of web shop where you put objects into your basket/wishlist/whatnot and you get the items when a production run is feasible. Then there's getting the extra customers who only want to jump in when the reprint gets a greenlight, who will reduce the costs for everyone else, I leave that to someone with ideas.
>>
>>112879375
I doubt I will, but I can at least own up to volume 37.

>flowers of evil
I'm enjoying that one, only two books in so far. Still not sure why the whole style of the covers changes so abruptly, but I assume there's a storyline reason for something so different. I hope there is at least, I get annoyed when a publisher changes the spine design halfway through by changing imprints - I think they do it on purpose.

>>
>>112879375
Yeah bit unfortunate, I would like to see a lot of these titles in print but contractually we will only have digital rights for them and even then the rights aren't permanent. But it is nice that we are able get these title out at all.

>I like your president.
Yeah is a pretty nice old man who doesn't have much interest in the yaoi or hentai but with the oldies like Tezuka titles.

>>112879379
There quite a lot of pressure from those who want our yaoi reprinted. Every con or event where I am selling I always get the same questions about reprints and stories of how older out of print volumes are going for like $300 a book on ebay.

I do like the idea personally, it would be great as I am sure those that are willing to drop a ton of money on an old book could drop a similar to help a greater number of people get that same volume. An issue I do see is that a lot of manga publishers are contracting/losing money and aiming for newer titles rather than looking at the past and thinking about reprints.

Its been fun /a/nons, got to go to bed for work in the morning. Will check back later.

At least you're getting something.

Here 4koma have never been published, comedy/sol is often ignored because doesn't sell enough while we keep getting dozens of generic battle shounen every month that people buy.

What's the point of having one of the biggest localized manga industry around when the variety is absimal and just keeps churning out more of the same?

It's fault of the shit taste of most of readers for the most part, but damnit publishers never even tried to propose something different.

I was considering buying one, but I saw in some videos that they have some kind of effect where the screen goes black and then changes whenever you do something.
Because that's ugly as hell, and it would be a big no-no.

This seems like the right thread so I need to ask something. I'm too dumb/drunk to make my own thread.

I ordered some things from j-list for the first time and payed for premium shipping. According to the order it should be 5-6 days business. It's been five days business and according to the tracker it hasn't even fucking left Japan.

Is the tracking incorrect or is it really going to take that long? I want my fucking games and manga dammit.
>>
>>112889611
Do you use japan's or your nation's postal service's tracker?

Unless it's EMS (your parcel's ID starts with EM or somesuch) or other fast service (e,g, DHL), it can take eternities.
>>

I'm impressed with the number of people who have original Japanese language volumes in their collection but how many of you can actually read Japanese? Do you buy them to read? to collect? to support the author/series? Or all three. I have the entire original release of Sailor Moon and Cardcapor Sakura in Japanese but only have them to collect since I can't read them.
>>
As soon as I own my own place and I'm earning a decent amount, I'm going to buy one of those beds with a sliding drawer underneath and store mango in it.
>>
>>112889965

True, and they may take much better care of my order than the thug mail carriers here in the states. I just wish I knew where it was and what's going on. I've sent things internationally but almost never had things sent to me.

Everything usually goes very smoothly when sent to Japan. Not so much in other countries.
>>
>>112889970
I usually buy Japanese manga if it's a series I really like that won't have an english release, if it's really long I opt to buy artbooks for it instead

I found it even better than the anime in some parts, namely cutting superfluous stuff and exposing better some key points of the plot (like how the fuck Adam appeared on Gendo's hand).
Plot-wise, follows the TV serie up to ep 24, the EoE up to Sea of Life scene, then gose on it's own (not yet completed) ending.

I can't really say "You're missing out", because Italian manga publishing have some big faults, but at least when comes down to sheer amount of volumes/series the only competing market among western countries is France (which is slightly better for /a/ - and my - standards due to which series are published).

Obviously there are ups and downs and you have to be wary of what you're doing, but overall is a quite good.

I thought so. It's basically the game but with some other random twists. It introduces a new random villain, but I mainly got it because you get to see Haseo, Endrance and Atoli in their real life/outside game selves. I got mine for $4 each, so it was worth it for me.

As much as knowing they could have saved the franchise with a reprint of some early volume.

I got 1-3 and 5-14 of Ichigo 100% for cheap on a blowout sale. I reckon every additional v4 could have created 5-10 additional sales.

The Hidamari fanbase has been through most things imaginable. From nosubs to "Sunshine Sketch" to terribad DVDs (even for license DVDs) to gorespam to a core seiyuu catching japanese cold to getting a publisher to reprint a moe 4koma. While in some sort of a slump at the moment, the old fans are pretty hardened and willing to pay up for their wide fix. Younger fans follow their example because of the wish to belong.

Anyhow.

Yotsuba and Hidamari Sketch have english releases.

Nichijou has a partial finnish release.

Yuyushiki is only in japanese.

Hey, it's the artbook CD anon.

A lot of things that won awards sold like shit, sadly. My favourite manga won an award in Japan and then all 20 volumes combined sold under 200 copies or something atrocious in English. Different market, not much you can do about it.
>>
>>112877915
Oh man, DMP you used to be the only faggotry shop in town, after Blu (TP) and co sunk. I tried so hard to support you as best as I could, but you only release utter shit oneshots and have stopped part way through actual series too often. I can't bring myself to buy anything you put out any more.
>>
>>112912541
Were you able to collect all of it?
>>
>>112912810
I'm missing volume six, which last I saw was around $50 used. I can't bring myself to pay that for one book, it's the principle of the thing. I had them all at once point, but used to lend books to people left and right and somehow that one never got back to me.

I really wish there were more fans, and I was tempted to scan it for /a/ but now the company is selling it digitally and I don't want to mess with the sales. Not that anyone would buy it I suppose, there's clearly evidence to support that. The lack of scanlations means no one to talk about it with though.
>>
>>112912317
Its real awesome, we got some pretty good relations with the Japanese publisher so we have quite a number of Tezuka titles in production.

>>112912760
It's understandable anon, publishing oneshots is a very safe thing for small publishers as the yaoi oneshots was our primary source of income for a while. Publishing series are quite a bigger hassle as they come with their own issues. We personally don't print all too many of our books in comparison to bigger manga publishers so stock usually lasts a few months. When I've sold at cons if I didn't have a volume 1 I could be sure the other volumes would sell like shit.

We have started publishing hentai under our project-h imprint. A lot of hentai series that I have hoped we would publish have been shot down as they were a series. In recent memory we had a chance to grab Aki Sora but it wasn't going to happen for a few reasons, being a series was one of them.

>>
>>112913573
My biggest problem with DMP/June is what they license is just, well, it's shit. I also have the first couple volumes of a lot of things they just stopped publishing with only a volume or two to go, or they waited years between book releases and as a result the volumes are two completely different sizes because they switched over to smaller volumes. The proofreading on the LNs, especially the early ones was non-existent. I even have a couple titles where none of the pages are in order.

I bought, and kept track of titles, from DMP for a long time. I want to say since 2003 or 2004. I kept buying understanding they were a smaller company that doesn't have the resources to do a lot, with the hope they would grow and improve. They just kept getting worse though, and I started to feel guilty supporting them. I wanted to love DMP, I did. I still have over 600 volumes of their manga but it just wasn't worth it. I hope they are a better company to work for than they are to be a customer for.

Yeah a lot of the old issues were before my time. From what I gather with a lot of the inconsistencies were because of changes in where the books were printed. I also do have a sort of idea where a lot of these issues came from. A lot of staff have started as unpaid interns that may have gotten paid after a period of time then hired but a lot of interns do leave after certain period of time and employee turnover is rather high. I personally started out as an unpaid intern for a little while.

I do believe more recent titles qc has improved minus the DMG stuff which is outsourced to freelance individuals and their work is so-so at times and incorrect at other times.

Beginner collector here.

Sadly, I have a very small collection and I don't really know what to get a lot of the times when I go to barnes and nobles.
I recently found out that Otoyomegatari had an english release I plan on picking that up some time.

Also, is it possible to get any of the individual volumes for Azumanga? I'm not really fond of the big omnibus.
>>
>>112922395
We all started with a small collection at some point. I remember buying my first 3 volumes of 20th Century Boys a little over a year ago. I actually want to pick up Monster Musume, but I have other things I want to get more as of now.

Sadly, a lot of the manga I want don't have english releases. I'd totally buy all the prison school volumes or Dumpire and friends.

Also, to the people that own it, how is Seven Deadly Sins? Found out it was by the guy who did Kongou banchou and I enjoyed that a lot.

Ma nigga.

Was going to recommend Ichiroh, Suzunari and SS Astro but I see you have them too.

I really wish they did more series. Perfect stuff for reading quick sections here and there.

I haven't bought the K-ons or kill me baby, how are they? The animes were pretty good and KMB might be a good 4koma, but idk about kon.

The anime improves on the K-ON manga. However, if I had neither and $100 to spare, I'd buy the manga for the sake of 4koma. I wish I was into social media so I could constantly bug Yenpress over Twitter.

As for Kill Me Baby, it's just the anime in paper form. I only bought it because my finnish is slightly better than my japanese, and I don't have to spend years learn runes. The same publisher also has Nichijou.

>>
>>112941252

Some american stuff does have it but its rather rare for them to do so. I would imagine it is 100% the companies being cheapskates.

I honestly still don't understand why a lot of them are rather low quality print with very high prices. They are sort of killing the industry themselves.

I sort of fell off buying manga after I got out of college since I have no local bookstore to get stuff from and amazon ordered stuff tends to get damaged. If prices were better I'd be more inclined to keep buying shit, but when you arleady have $1000's worth of it taking up space its hard to justify buying more. I did my time to support the industry, alot of which went to tokyo pop just to get itself killed when I had ongoing series i was waiting on.

I can't really into manga
>>
>>112941431
I understand the extra couple of dollars for an extra-narrow niche series that'll ony get the minimum print run. But skimping on the paper is pretty silly in those cases. The difference in paper costs should only be a few cents unless you go full toilet paper. The big costs should be licensing, printing and getting rid of printed copies.

In the end I honestly don't understand why US manga is so much more expensive than various european languages. English caters to some half billion potential customers, Finnish five million at most, one volume of manga is $3-4 cheaper in finnish, after all sorts of crazy taxation.
>>
>>112945323
Watch out for the format though, it can alter the prices a lot.

Here in Italy "normal" manga volumes have always been cheaper (4 to 7 euros on average, depending on format/publisher/date - as they've grown at least 1 euro more expensive over the latest years) than most western counterparts.
But when comparing my volumes with the ones overseas they're regularly smaller and "cheaper" in the materials and quality, save for reprints/new editions which are made with a bigger one on purpose.

And when you pick those editions the price difference with other countries becomes minimal, if present at all, as they cost 10 to 13 euro.

Sure, it's still the "a bit expensive Italian reprint" being on par with "normal UK/US/whatever manga volume" pricing, but you get my point.

You could probably have cheaper volumes if your publishers used the same format standards we have here, but honestly is not always worth the loss of volume quality and size.

My entire collection, unless you also count the R.O.D Official Archive artbook that I got a few years later.

That's a shitload of BL. How do you explain this to your family?
>>

My mother is a fan. Beyond that, I don't generally take my family into my bedroom when they visit. That would be weird.

I've actually got more regular manga, but I don't keep it all in one place and that's too many bookshelves to photograph.

If it's something I like, I'll re-read often.
And usually when I draw I actively try to find some good references in the books I have.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Tanks = Multiple volumes right?
How the hell do people good about reading paperback versions of them? I'd be afraid of the spine giving out.

If I understand it correctly, tankobon are just single volumes. As in, once something runs in a magazine they are collected into tanks. Bunkoban are the re-releases that are bigger than usual, which would be comparable to an 'omnibus' release, I think? Wide-ban are the fancy, larger scale volumes comparable to Viz Signiture and DMP's old stuff, I think?

Some one correct me on this, I'm guessing based on how I've seen the terms used.

Tankobons are multiple chapters compiled together, not volumes.

As for the paperback versions, which is all the tanks I own, seem to hold up pretty well compared to most comics/books.
Here's a comparison between a tank's spine and a comics spine, of which I've read each three times and always open the pages as wide as possible so the spine does bend a bit.

Ok so I was wrong then, I have several of these tanks.
I guess what I was referring to was an Omnibus?

picked him up at target, packaging looked neat, didn't want to open :)

Yes omnibuses are the multiple volume compilations. They are still sturdily bound, but yes since they are thicker you will stress them more and be more likely to leave creases. Not really an issue for comics though.

I have some omnibus novels that takes months to read through all of and that shit causes stress and hurts my hands like mad. They are actually the reason I finally bought an e-reader and I don't buy printed novels anymore.

Yes, Omnibus' (usually) have 3 volumes compiled into one. Though the spines are terrible and the page quality is pretty shitty too. Viz Bigs are even worse.
