What old anime have you been watching?
>>

Might as well name the thread "ancient anime thread".

Is that supposed to be anime?

I've been entertaining the idea of rewatching Ojarumaru, though it's not exactly old. It's been airing since the 90's, I think, at least before I was born.
>>
>>112787548
But the large majority of the posts were people trolling or mentioning some 90s show.

>>
>>112787568
It's Japanese animation, so technically (by MAL standards) it is anime.
>>
Working on re-encoding this: http://bakabt.me/146854-japanese-anime-classic-collection.html
>>
>>112787577
Only a few mentioned very recent shows.
It's not unlikely that most of /a/ really doesn't care about pre-'90s animu.
And I really wouldn't call anything pre-2000 "old", anon.

The whole thing? No, maybe the first volume though. I'm re-encoding it from DVD so for one it takes a long time to download, and then I have to:

-split all the VODs one by one to their own directories
-inverse telecine and crop the frame individually for each film
-OCR the subtitles and then correct+style them
-encode and mux the whole thing

I don't think I'll mess with tons of test encodes since they look pretty shitty due to being old and damaged and low resolution, so at least that's not gonna take too long.

I'll up the first one soon

I'm rewatching Eva for the 9th time in the 2 years I've been watching anime.
It's still as refreshing and captivating as the first time, it's really like I'm in love.
I'm also starting like Rei more and more, even though I really liked Asuka at first and didn't really register Rei that much. Now if only Mari was in the original and had an actual role, such a waste of a nice character design.
>>
>>112787472

Zeta Gundam and it's absolutely fantastic. Much better than 0079 but I love both shows, Kamile is just a more enjoyable protagonist than Amuro was which makes Zeta interesting.

I was thinking of watching either Giant Gorg or Ashita no Joe next.

>>
currently watching Mobile suit Gundam
>>
>>112788698
How many minutes total?
>>
>>112788722
It's still encoding, but estimated size of 175MB for 11 minutes and rising, minus audio and subs (~15MB).

Will probably denoise it a bit.
>>
>>112788766
It's not too bad. I mean, 400MB per 20 minutes is basically what we're used to anyway, even if it's at a bigger resolution.
>>
Currently watching Patlabor. TV, OVA and first movie are still the best. Later movies are still shamefully terrible even by the already shamefully terrible standards of shamefully terrible anime.
>>
>>112788511
I will never understand how people can enjoy Gundam. I tend to have pretty average and commonplace taste, so the fact that Gundam spawned a successful franchise and is still widely liked confuses me incredibly.
>>
>>112788883
Which ones have you taken a look at?
What exactly turns you off?
>>
>>112788790
I'll try it after degraining with avisynth and see how it goes.
>>
Hi no Tori 2772. Can't really recommend it, but I had fun watching it. Also, just began watching Moespada. It's turboretarded so far.
>>
>>112788883

I felt the exact same way but after watching it from 0079 it's actually really enjoyable. The fact it spawned a multimedia franchise with so many entries is what was so intimidating about it, I had only first hand experience with Wing when it aired in my country on our version of Toonami years back but I didn't like that much but I am really loving the Universal Century stuff so far.

Also Char pretty much makes it worth watching.

>>112788575

Are there any decent uploads of Sally on Bakabt or Nyaa? I know it's on youtube but I would rather download it as opposed to streaming. I am mostly interested in Sally since it's the rumoured the first mahou shoujo not to mention it's involvement in the whole Aum affair, supposedly the leader of that cult's mysticism and stuff was inspired by Sally.

>>112788651

I need to finish watching the OVAs and movies but then I would have no more LOGH to watch. Oh well, luckily I managed to find one of the novels when I visited Book Off this year. Bought it for the price of $1 which was a great find and it was the 4th novel in the series where Phezzan is occupied I think.
>>
Currently up to ep 30 of Rose of Versailles and it's been brilliant
>>
>>112788969
0079 and Zeta. MCs keep exploding in emotion out of nowhere. They also tend to fall madly in love at first sight, because of esper affinity or something, which is probably the worst way I can think of of introducing romance. There's also those incredibly obvious and hamfisted death flags. And those incredibly annoying kids. And people making some incredibly dumb decisions but nobody pointing out how incredibly retarded they were and instead brushing things off as the folly of youth or something. I could go on and on and on, but typing from a tablet is tiresome.
>>
>>112789050
There's the few episodes that TSHS subbed.
Sally was the first magical girl TV-manga but the Himitsu no Akko-chan manga came out earlier. Beyond that it depends on what you count as magical girl.
>>
>>112789207
Try watching Turn A then, it's a lot different from those.
>>
Killing time with OVAs. Nineteen 19 was pretty good for a half drama half music video.

I realized that I have seen a TV anime from every year since 71, an OVA for every year since 83, a hentai for every year since 84 but for movies I have a gap in 96.
Now Black Jack will have to patch that.

I desire old good fantasy anime. I'm looking for eighties stuff or pre-Slayers nineties stuff. Not really a fan of the typical Slayers-inspired fantasy comedy stuff. Anybody know any good stuff?

Well, obviously. That's like the first thing to go to.

But yeah, I'm looking for straight fantasy. Doesn't have to be devoid of humour though.

>>
>>112793010
Just from your image that looks over filtered. You can barely see that woman's face.
>>
>>112790919
Well, anime is pretty shit as a medium for fantasy. Slayers is, de facto, better written and more detailed and has a more engaging and better cast than all the other more "serious" shit out there.

Books is the only way to go. Not films, not TV series, not manga, not comics - books.
>>
>>112793112
lol
>>
>>112793112
Pretty sure that is just the film being in horrible condition from being so old.
>>
>>112793257
Did they film a projection instead of scanning the film?
>>
>>112793312
Pretty sure that was done for some early digital conversion for 90s anime series, so I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case here as well.
>>
>>112793312

>>
>>112793010
>>112789798
Those two movies were made in the same year, one of them looks like shit and is 1 minute long, the other looks pretty good and 11 minutes long. What happened?
>>
>>112793802
Would you have preferred if the longer one looked like shit?
>>
>>112794041
No, it's just weird how much better it is.
>>
>>112793802
I would assume it all depends how much care the people who end up holding the film take with it. There are lots of films from this era that simply don't even exist anymore. Using cels for drawing had only just started coming in around 1928 aswell and the Japanese only had access to imported or poor quality material even reusing the celluloid by washing it. I would assume given that the variation is either due to storage of the film or the quality of material it was on to begin with.
>>
I bought Tetsuwan Atom DVD boxes since I couldn't find any of it online (private trackers, Google, all normal channels, etc.)

Goddamn it sucks how hard it is to watch old anime. No subtitles for anything, and lucky if you can even find raws.
>>
>>112794107
Warner Brothers (or Schlesinger Productions) washed their cels too back then. You can see the girls they hired for it in their studio gag reels.
>>
>>112796217
Oh really, I am supposing their early films aren't in poor condition? If so I guess the blame must be put on the way the films were stored or maybe having a celluloid of poorer manufacture. I have read that the celluloid in Japan early on was 'slightly yellowish and thicker compared to the thinner more transparent variety available in America" which I would suppose would point to an inferior production technique at the time but that is just speculation on my part.
>>
>>112787697

Still watching Future Boy Conan. Great show. Against my better judgement, a friend and I are are going to try and get it shown at out uni's anime club tonight. We figure it has a chance because of Miyazaki.

>>112787548
Not counting some shorts, the oldest thing I;ve seen to completion was Horus: Prince of the Sun. I really enjoyed it. Its influence definitely shows on later works by both Takahata and Miyazaki. The first episode of Future Boy Conan has A LOT in common with it.
>>

In the mid-1960s, Toei also faced stiff competition from rival studios that produced lucrative television animation series. During that period, television had become a popular medium of entertainment and communication in Japan, and Toei’s management also decided to focus on producing animated television series. Eventually, there was a shortage of staff to work on the production of Hols. As a result, the film was made during a period that was shrouded with heated management arguments, threats, and labor disputes. In terms of artistic achievement, the animated story appealed both visually and narratively to university students and high school graduates (Fan, 1997: 141). Surprisingly, the film was only shown for ten days in the theater and Toei was disappointed with the “kind” of audience attending the film; the management was most concerned that the film did not seem to attract younger viewers, especially children. Hols became the lowest earning animation film in Toei D?ga’s box office returns and consequently, Takahata was demoted to assistant director.

I don't understand why they aren't, it's not like they're hard to find or anything (at least some of them).

Do you think if someone put up Atom raws someone would actually bother translating it?
>>

>I don't understand why they aren't
Most people are not interested in seeing anime from the 1960s.

I know it's not particularly old (12 years) but if Full Metal Panic any good?

I've been listening to the op for 5 days nonstop.
>>
>>112806787

It's all just a matter of someone wanting to work on it. It's easier to download manga raws and determine if you want to translate it, than trying to find old VHS rips that have 0 seeds (and then getting people capable of timing, encoding, etc). Reading and listening are different, since most people only bother to learn reading, and also >>112806828

Whenever I watch older anime I realise how shit the ones we get now are (few exeptions).
>>
>>112806933
That is because whenever you are watching old anime you are selecting from a relatively small pool of 'classics' and when you watch modern anime at 15-20 a season you are picking up any number of shows which could or could not be shit.
>>
>>112807046
What you say is partialy true but you can't deny that anime know doesn't take any risks.
Sure there used to be a lot of shit anime too but the range of the themes and topics etc. was much wider.
>>
>>112806787
It's because there's no hype around old shows. If something's translated then it's because somebody has a personal interest in a show and coincidentally also access to raws (of whatever quality).
Shit's not likely.
>>
>>112807117
No it wasn't.

The OVAs from the golden OVA era were very different from the regular TV line up, but other than that, anime didn't change nearly as much as people like to think.

At best you could make an argument like "before Sailor Moon, magical girl anime used to be just slice of life!"

Atom is on DVD (though I don't know if it's upped anywhere) and so is Tetsujin 28-go and at least the first part of it is upped as ISOs.

El Hazard. Can't wait to see those scenes with Ifurita and intro in 1080p. Having the uncompressed audio will be amazing as well.

I didn't watch puss in boots or this yet even though I went through all that trouble remuxing them and uploading them.

I hope I like them but just having them in best quality possible is good enough for me.

I'll queue the torrent and encode it later if no one else does. But if I do that'll be after Japanese Anime Classic Collection.

Is the anime anywhere as good as the manga? Manga gets beautiful as shit somewhere 1/4 through. Those backgrounds and the way the author presents locations is brilliant.
>>
>>112809632
Is this all subbed already? I remember a while ago people were complaining about some episode/movie being unsubbed.

I like how of the two Wikipedia articles on Animerama (trilogy of anime films with erotic content), the French one is longer and more complete.
>>
>>112809853
I can't compare them because I haven't read it, but the anime is good, is what I know. It's ugly and muddy early on as well but the visual effects, use of sound, storyboarding and so on are astounding, especially for a newbie director adapting a phenomenally popular manga.
