>In cooperation with 15 major anime production companies and manga publishers, the Japanese government will next month start a huge extermination operation against 580 foreign sites which have illegally uploaded anime and manga contents on the web without the copyright holders' permission, NHK reported on July 28. While the government has started supporting the genre as one of their important cultural exports, there appears to be no end of illegal uploading of anime and manga via pirate sites, mainly operated by Chinese. The Cultural Affairs Agency estimates the loss caused by the Chinese pirate sites last year was amounted to at least 560 billion yen (about US$ 5.5 billion).

>On August 1, the government will start simultaneously sending requests to delete illegal anime and manga contents to the operators of the 580 foreign pirate sites which they have found. In addition, the operation will launch a new site to guide the fans to a legitimate site offering some 250 titles including the latest ones at a cost of several hundred yen.

So? Pirating anime was already illegal. The only possible change is you might (not very likely unless you use Chinese torrent sites) have to change what website you download/torrent from.
>>
So how exactly is the Japanese government going to do anything about sites operated outside of Japan? Is this why Abe wanted to change article 9?
>>
>>111262910
Piracy is what brought anime here in the first place.

And i don't think people from the west will massively buy anime all the sudden since their websites are gone heck there will be even fewer sales in the west then it is now.
>>
>>111264639
Plenty of webhosts will comply with takedown requests from the owner if you're hosting copyrighted content. It causes a lot of trouble for streaming sites to deal with it.

If they don't comply with a takedown request, then it's unlikely that they'll really go to court to try to take down the website. But having to jump from host to host could be a big hassle for some of the streaming sites so I bet a few of them would go down.

That's my experience for US/European sites, but I'm not sure what Chinese hosts do. I think they don't give a shit at all.
>>
>>111264830
Yes, from the copyright holder, but how is that any different from the situation as it is right now? The Japanese government does not own any copyrights personally, so I don't see what their help is going to change.
>>
>>111264639

They will try to use intimidation, demanding, threatening, citing international law, "consequences will never be the same", etc.

Then if there isn't a response, they may try and contact local governments. But for the most part, this is a lost cause unless the site is being hosted in a country with strict piracy laws.
>>
>>111264830
Fuck the streaming sites, it'd be excellent if they all died. Parasitic shitheads like the people who run ad-ridden streaming sites for the sole purpose of obtaining their filthy advertising shekels deserve to have their livelihoods killed.

What's the best ambassador of Japan in the world ?
Yeah, manga and anime.
Without that, nobody would give a fuck about Japan.
And they want to stop that ?
A whole generation has learned to love Japan without Japan having to do anything, an they want to stop that ?
Because of manga and anime, a lot of people see Japaneses as equals at last, and they want to stop that ?
In todays world, there is nothing more valuable than good advertising, and they want to stop this subtle, free advertising they got worldwide ?
I can't find a single word to resume the extent of that kind of stupidity.

their greed is literally trying to kill anime
>>
>>111267170
Having 250 titles on launch is not bad at all really.
Especially since they have the majority of hit series right now and that's the majority of pirated downloads.

Obviously this won't get rid of the big sites, but it may get some of the normalfags to paying for their manga. Could've been a worse attempt

If zero people bought your product than you obviously fucked up somewhere. The piracy just emphasizes that.

Single-player only games like Skyrim are easy as shit to pirate yet developers are getting plenty of sales. Why? Because they made somtehing fans consider worthy of buying.

There are only 2 things you need to do to curb piracy.
1. Make a good product at a reasonable price
2. Make sure it's just as easy to get that product legally as it is to pirate it.

They dont buy anything else. Its easy to have disposable income when you dont go outside, dont own a car, dont have to pay for gas, dont go to movies or wherever with friends. Or live at home and dont pay for anything but animu
>>
So what? If they attack illegal streaming sites all it will do is piss off some plebs who actually watch stream anime with watermarks, adds, shitty quality and stolen subs. They are doing the community a service. I don't really pirate manga so I can't give two fucks about that either. >>111267972
If they were never going to buy it then the piracy means nothing. It had zero effect on the company.
However there are plenty of cases where fans would pay money but choose not to.
A good example would be most of /a/. I know at least I would buy anime if I could get it on BD or a BD-quality download and subbed at a reasonable price. $100 for a 12 episode series is not reasonable and that is why no one outside of japan is buying it on a large scale.

Pretty much. Just look at my options as an American
- Buy extremely overpriced BDs with no subs shipped from Japan
- Pay for low quality Crunchyroll stream (assuming Crunchyroll was able to get it) and not even own the actual content
- Pay for an overpriced American shitty dub that will have a shitty sub If I'm lucky and will be released at least a year after the show ends and I've seen all the spoilers

Torrenting a fansub through Nyaa is so much better than all of these options I'd pick it even if I had to pay a subscription fee

Sure, except more doesn't mean better.

If you drop the price by half, and you don't get well over a 150% increase in sales, you're losing money. The anime industry is based around hardcore fans that will pay any price, the price is no issue when it comes to deciding if they want to support a show or not. When you drop the price of a blu-ray to 75%, you get a minor 10-20% bump in sales. Even ignoring the true loss in profit margins, you're still not selling as much.

TRIGGER animu got crowdfunded and then trigger saved anime.

buying obscenely overpriced animu has always primarily gone only to the studio heads.

publishers are scared their free ride is being threatened by internet, where piracy fights corporatism and crowdfunding MAY empower good artists to break free of the shackles that rob them of their intellectual property and outside of rich outliers like the Big 3's mangaka, for example, get paid an utter pittance.

The biggest flaw with their logic is that they think that by taking down these streaming/torrent sites people will buy more shit. Even if it's just a hundred more sales, it's more than 0. In their mind this makes Crunchyroll (not including torrent sites like nyaa of course) the only way to watch anime. The real issue here is that Crunchyroll does not sub every new show, and they also don't sub shows that have already aired. Some sales for new stuff will increase, but the shows that aren't subbed will get swept under the rug completely, and will end up selling even less because the interest is no longer there. Shows that sold a measly 500 blu rays and flopped hard before will really suffer now. Shows like SAO on the other hand probably won't be affected at all. In the end big, ignorant businessmen win, and the industry suffers for its idiocy.
>>
>>111268886

I don't really delve deep enough into sales and the like to provide any definitive proof, but if you look at how Kill La Kill (yes, I know, KLK is bad / a shit / etc.) is currently selling their product, you could say that anime like it is typically only bought by those that are obsessed.

Right now, they are selling BD with 4 episodes each on it, and they have a couple of extras sold with them. I believe the distributors are selling these at $60 a set? You'd have to be insane (or a collector, who is likely equally insane) to pay for each of these disks instead of waiting for a complete collection. The difference in price would probably be in the hundreds of dollars.

My comment isn't entirely relevant to the thread, but there is some circumstantial proof to his point, at least. (Keep in mind, I don't buy a lot of BDs or merch, so I don't know if that is what typically keeps the industry afloat or not.)

Miyazaki laments how when people think of Japan they think of rape cartoons made for otaku, who are the stinking anus of nippon.

Anime and manga doesn't have enough official translations to get the same amount of diversity it has in Japan, which is why most of us rely on fan translations. They would need to do more translations if they wanted more people outside of Japan to willingly buy their works, and most translated works don't even support anything other than the translators anyways. If they want to get an equal profit from overseas, then anime and manga would become much more expensive than in Japan do to the added costs of translations and such.

Probably the best thing for Japan to do is to just get more of the more profitable series overseas and forget the rest, shows like maybe Vanguard or Precure which generate most of their profits through collectables and merchandises and also target mostly kids but has potential with adults as well. Small stuff that comes and goes every season or so would just be unnecessarily expensive and too risky to take overseas.

“We're invulnerable pirates, har har har!”
“No one will ever money for anime!”
Same circlejerking as ever.

You are always talking about sentient people making decisions, that's a very common mistake. Most consumers are not like that. Industry's aim is people who type "anime name download" into Google and never go past first page. They learned where to click and can't even explain the difference between streams and torrents. “Technology? Detectability? Censorship resistance? Nah, the fuck if I'd known”. Any copyright campaign puts technical means after brainwashing those people and guiding them to official services. Just making them watch ads on a “free” site creases some revenue, and many can give 5 or 10 bucks for “premium” features after proper handling. Why do you think there is so many shitty anime and manga sites for dummies? Because there *is* a demand — and a way to make money. Owners naturally think it should be their money.

I rarely see Chinese peers on Nyaatorrents' torrents. Because of political censorship and language barrier, Chinese are using Chinese services and Chinese software that don't care about copyright. In case you don't know, Popcorn Time is not an original idea at all. There is plenty of one-click clients for dumb users on developing markets, mostly bundled with adware and viruses. They are very effective, and that's why MAFIAA will never allow such thing in the West. Not because of countless users who use torrents *now*, but because of *possible* number of infected users from general public who can switch from iTunes, etc.

Anyway, there is *a lot* of Japanese flags in my torrent client. And Japanese have shops, legal streaming, etc. and are expected to spend their yens. I think well-known trackers should be alert more than shitty streaming sites.
>>
>>111277994
Number of conscious users (us) who understand what they are paying for is much smaller. And, honestly, a chance to watch 2-4 movies a year on festivals or in selected theaters worths supporting struggling local publishers. It is better than nothing at all.

You seriously think that they will go after stream sites when Nyaa and torrents exist? This is addressed to everyone in the thread too. They won't even be able to get rid of streaming sites like AnimeFreak because the content isn't even hosted on the site. When I used them in the past, all the videos were just embedded from Dailymotion and Megavideo. Unlike streaming sites, fansubbers actually distribute the material by themselves. I don't see any mention of them going after streaming sites to begin with.

The way I see it, fansubbing taking a small to moderate hit is possible.

LOL, NO.
The only good thing about Rutracker anime torrents is speed. Metadata organization is awful.
— Everyone remux everything from any foreign/local release. You are very lucky if partial source is mentioned somewhere in the description.
— No one of those fuckers uses AniDB. It would be useless anyway as torrents are constantly updated, rehashed, and updated by “better” versions according to the rules, and rules don't favor consistent releases in any way.
— Raws are disallowed, and most files are injected with horrible fandub (or five of them, for the glory of Satan). That also rules out bonuses.
— Years of drama and tension between mods, groups, fandubbers and their supporters I don't even want to think about.

I doubt that the amphibious operation needed to take the Japanese islands would've been too much for the Soviets to handle, it would be some time before they could get all the necessary logistics in place for such an assault, and by then the American landing in the southern parts of Japan would already be in full swing. The most likely scenario is that had the nukes not been dropped, the war would've lasted maybe another year with the American moving slowly up and eastward suffering immense casualties. Then, if the Soviets invaded, They'd move southward from Hokkaido and Aomori. The end result would be a Japan divided North/ South, or East/West depending on fast the Soviets moved.

Another thing wrong is that they claim that they lose a lot of money to piracy, when their actual BDs cost a small fortune to buy anyway. Plus, it's partially their fault due to those ridiculous prices. Sure, otaku will be willing to pay whatever price, but what about the masses? Heck, most people outside of Japan? Even within Japan, the late-night anime industry is already niche (I know, I've been to Japan, and outside of Akihabara you barely see anything anime-related other than mainstream fare outside of specialized anime stores), but it's like the industry is doing their best to only make it more niche.

The sad thing is that, the industry in general claims that they lose a lot of money due to piracy, but still earn so much money, the amount of money that other industries can only dream about.

Well, the problem with scanlations now is that too much stuff is consolidated.

mangaupdates is the only scanlations listing site left. batoto and the mangafox/mangacow/mangapanda (run by the same people) are the only major reader sites, and we've now shifted to reader sites/reader technology as the major force in the scanlation world. If those are targeted, we're in trouble.

animesuki user-base migrated to tokyotosho, lurk irc user-base migrated to reader websites, and hongfire user-base migrated to anime-sharing.

Reader sites have no current alternative. Unless the community commits to irc again, I think we'll be going back digging around for ddls ( which will be meager since even collecting, storing, and sharing scans of manga is expensive and time consuming)

Besides, they can sell a lot of merchandise to cover production costs, to the point that many shows are made solely as merch sellers.

Ukrainians (and Belorussians) are basically Russia Light, but yes, You could really go on for quite some time listing the cultures and peoples that Russians attempted to alter or outright destroy.

Pearl Harbor was the exact opposite of beginner's luck.

They had the worst possible outcome in every single way; they missed a shitton of bombs due to the wrong signal given(They had two signals revolving around movement, one if they were spotted and one if they weren't), the US carriers were out, they sunk the ships in a harbor(Allowing the men to be saved/ships to be repaired), the landing docks/repair shit wasn't bombed either, they aimed mainly for battleships, ect.

The only lucky part was that the US was too cocky to anticipate the attack.
>Japan and US cannot into warnings and reasonable advice.
"Eyy lmao maybe Pearl Harbor is a little exposed you might want to geton that"
"EYY yo maybe you folks should stop investing in battleships and get some more carriers instead... also the top-level brass are honor indulged retards, don't listen to em'. Operation Ten-Go is a horrible idea, maybe you should just surrender..."

Also,I remember there was a paper on how successful Pearl Harbor was in term of accuracy and how many bombs hit. I think it was something ridiculously low like 30% due to how much of a massive clusterfuck it was.

End of the internet for normalfags, you mean. It will end up in a point where only through either convoluted or super sekkrit ways will you be able to download shit. But outright stop? Impossible. /g/ will save us.

They're Russians. Kiev was the capital of Russia and we have the same culture.

Christian brothers. Stalin was from Georgia, they lived in Paradise in the USSR.

They inveded Russia and stayed here. Then we beat the crap out of them and let some stay as our people.

But the reason why us Flips buy those pirated DVDs is because the official ones are too expensive. They sell for like $20. Given that the average monthly income is around $230, having a large collection of the latest DVDs isn't exactly the priority in most Flips' minds.

>and it wont have mass appeal anyway.

Bullshit. See how fucking popular Dragonball was. There are many other examples as well - DBZ is universal, but, for example, Saint Seiya was fucking huge in latin countries. Not all anime has mainstream appeal, true enough, but the same can be said of music or videogames.
>>
>>111282069
>they even bothered to get rid
They didn't. Russian politics disbanded USSR without asking anybody. And you know, politics is just a dirty game all about money. I am russian and I never met any Russian, who cared about Czechs or Poland. And you can see their cultures pretty much untouched.
>>
Well, it could be a problem if they start going after the locals who upload stuff.

Where is ZeroRaws based, for example? Are they nips?
>>
>>111282266
And yet Poles and Czechs constantly bitch about how poorly they were treated by both Imperial Russia and the USSR. There's also all the revolts and rebellions that happened during the Cold War in the Warsaw Pact that were against Soviet control, and the times that the Soviets came in and straight up murdered thousands of protesters in Czechoslovakia and Hungary. I'm sure many if your friends just thing all that stuff is western lies.

It was some military abuse to get closer to the Europe. No cultural stuff involved. BTW, in Russia only few know about this part of history, cause the info wasn't public.

You buy the doll and some parts. As far as I know. I saw them in some threads on one russian board.

Is it really that hard to implement this well?
Why can't they just provide all anime, all manga, all hentai, all hmanga, in any format, in any resolution, in any codec, drm free, download or stream.
There has to be no region lock so it can be available world wide. I can't access a single link they provide due to my location.
Get rid of licensing shit, this seems to be a major Jewish invention to get money to people that didn't create the content and inherently creates region blocks. Therefore the majority of the money should go to the content creators.
Should pricing be subscription based or pay per anime/manga?
>>
>>111282934
Honestly most people don't really know either, including you.
>>
>>111284325
All that you propose would require cooperation with the clustrfuck that is international law. Furthermore, it would require radically changing the industry, maybe even eliminating stock-based markets. That will certainly not happen for now.
>>
oh fuck
>>
>>111284325
Knowing how money hungry the nips are it'll probably never happen. The big anime studios want to squeeze as much cash out of you as possible.

>HQ rips
BD remuxes are usually not much higher quality than a good encode with some filtering. Usually the BD's are pretty bad and full of banding, some of which can be fixed by player debanding, but not as well as higher quality algorithms.

Also, aliasing issues which can't be fixed with a simple filter. See [Meguca] for Italian BD superiority over JP BD.
>>
>>111282431
The raw providers for fansub groups aren't in any danger. If you use SFTP to transfer the recorded episodes, you would never get caught. It's only if you try to share them on Japanese file-sharing which is no longer secure and anonymous.

The irony is that the western fanbase as it is wouldn't exist without pirating. The y actually gained money from this because some people got interested enough that they eventually started buying some things instead of simply downloading it.

anime is niche, manga is not. Most people on /a/ don't realize that they are vastly different industries with different attitudes. One of the fucking prime ministers of japan admitted to reading manga.
>>
>>111293273
You're still watching it illegally, you retard. And Japan hates you with a passion.
>>
>>111293416
Way to miss the point, you fucknugget
>>111265823
is asking why anyone would care about streaming sites, as in why anyone in /a/ should give a shit if streaming sites have to switch webhosts, he's essentially asking why you're wasting our time by bringing them up.
>>
Considering Himado is still running I'd say they're rather toothless.
>>
>>111293493
Japan cares. As in both official distributors because they supposedly lose billions of shekels and people living in rural areas that don't air anime at all and illegal streaming sites are their only way to watch anime without a week delay.
>>
>>111282795
Well, actually the days of re-uploading from Japanese P2P are long gone because all Share encoders quit, so most raws you see on Nyaa are original encodes. What's more funny, Japanese people rely on those as their only source as opposed to few years ago when foreigners relied on the Japanese.
>>
>>111293708
Are you acting this much like a retard on purpose, or are you really that stupid? The point was never whether or not Japan cares, of course they care. The point is that nobody on /a/ cares about streaming sites so talking about them is a waste of time. Japan will probably target them because the ignorant majority that make up the foreign anime fandom use them and torrents will be left alone because only people "in the know" use them.
>>
>>111293856
You sure seem to be caring a lot m8.
