There was no other way out for her. Having her die would be too much risk, and drama is not something that Kamachi does in Index. But she couldn't stay like nothing happened either, if she conserved her human size, it'd be an easy win for her over other girls, because she has raised the most flags with Touma, by far.
Kamachi made her too compatible and special for Touma that something like this had to happen to prevent the logical next step between them after all the obvious attachment and affection they grew for each other during NT10, 15cm transformation to make it "fair" for the rest and keep Touma's character undeveloped in the relationship sense, because she had no competition as it stood.

I got into this series because "things happen" but not when Touma's around which is why I don't find him as compelling as the characters surrounding him. Touma's boring but boring doesn't equal no potential. The closest we got to unlocking his potential was Othinus.

Kamachi did it to sneak his way out of the corner he wrote himself into with how close and affectionate Othinus and Touma grew for each other. If another writer was in charge of writing the end of this, it would surely have ended with death end, OR most likely, a romantic end.

Touma is ok when in action and even for most of the time the comic relief romance works well. Kamachi never pretended that Touma's relationships with girls are anything more than a fukou da comedy. However, the whole Touma-Othinus situation seemed to be more serious; maybe not romance-wise but there were some signs that it might end with a major event, preparing the ground for next arc and the final ride. Yet, we got the +1 to harem reset button once again, which is probably the least interesting way of resolving the whole situation.
I know that it was just a wishful thinking, but I hoped for something new to happen.

Many shounen manga and light novels can handle romance just fine.

To put it more specific and to compare it to Index, some popular Dengeki LN writers, that despite their work being popular, aren't afraid of developing their main characters in a romantic sense. Some wait until the end for it like pic related, and others like Kawakami and Narita establish the pairings right away from the start, avoiding the issue of shipping wars and shitty harem hijinks.

But in Index this is almost impoosible to happen. Instead of developing the old characters and strengthen their relationships, Kamachi keeps introducing new ones that will be replaced as well once their arc ends. Othinus was a special case, but will also suffer the same fate.
