XY episodes range from 7/10 to a 10/10, it's remarkably better than everything from Johto to Best Wishes and while it's still pokemon as it's always been, you can tell that there's actual attention being paid now.

Somehow it got a big budget and writers that give a fuck, and all the main characters are enjoyable. Ash is competent, his wins and losses are largely decided by strategy.

Jessie also figured out that wobbuffet is powerful as fuck, which is nice.
