I think his 1k USD estimate is a bit high too, unless you are taking accommodation into that.

Food and transportation are really cheap, though it comes down to how much you eat in the end.

If you are trying to plan your first trip it would be better to over estimate your daily costs though, and of course having money left over isn't a bad thing.

>>109337175

From the experience of my one trip to Japan you don't even need to go to Hokkaido to get away from English speaking tourists. If you just don't go to places in guide books you'll be fine.

When my friend and I were walking to Kinkakuji in Kyoto we saw all these sakura in bloom above a walled complex about 10 minutes walk away from Kinkakuji. On the way back we stopped by to check it out and they were setting up for a festival of sorts, there was a shrine within the grounds too and there were a lot of people there. All these blooming sakura, all the tourist buses would have been driving past on the way to Kinkakuji and we didn't see a single non-Asian face in there, it was madness. And I had taiyaki.

>>109339324

>No, I went with my imouto
>Yes, we haven't stopped talking about it two years later
>No, but you could hear people talking about you, trying to figure out where you were from. Some people were incredibly friendly though. Offering assistance even when you didn't request it
>Barely
>Expensive. It cost the two of us about $3000AUD each for the 16 days we were there but we splurged here and there

I imagine they love it. I'm from Australia and everyone that asked was delighted when we told them.

>Offering assistance even when you didn't request it
It reminds here me when a japanese family asked me for directions and I ended up helping them for a couple of hours. I swear to god their daughter was the embodiment of tsundere
>>
>>109339817

I was surprised too to be honnest, i thought the ywould be like 5cm average shorter.

The thing that did surprised me is that every damn elder is realy short; it looks like they shrink when they age and loose 20cm.

I also saw a lot of old people with realy bad posture, hunchbacked people and everything...
>>
>>109340416
>I swear to god their daughter was the embodiment of tsundere
Do elaborate.
>>
>>109340416
>I ended up helping them for a couple of hours
In what way? I can't imagine giving directions would take that long.
>>
>>109340449
I second this
>>
>>109340227
How nice. I separated with my friends for a few days when I went on a trip with them to Tokyo and they saw all sorts of crazy stuff while I just wandered around the ordinary streets. I never seem to attract the kind of weirdos that people always tell stories of when they go on a holiday.
>>

I suck at giving estimates like that, but I can tell you it's not that hard to find a 6' tall young male.
>>

6'2'', not freak tall but way over the standard for my country.

So did she punch you fifty feet into the air through a wall or what?
>>
>>109340357

Just stop to some random train station between two big/average towns and have a walk in the neighborhood.

Did this a few times while in Japan and it was realy good.

But if you want to avoid foreigners at all cost you'll miss things, like beautiful(and popular) temples or gardens.

You gotta see a little of everything.

It's like these people wo say "i only want to go to the countryside in Japan", it's nonsense, Japan is urban by definiton: you gotta see a little of everything.
>>
Would someone that's ~5'10-11" fit in fine then?
>>
>>109339099
Best time to go to Hokkaido in my opinion is winter due to all the great snowboarding locations and the ice festival.
>>
>>109340557
I've been and I agree with you, the cities are awesome. I only ever encountered foreigners in the hostel I was staying in and occasionally at the very large tourist attractions. Most other places were just about 100% Japanese.
>>
>>109340504
Is it somewhere in Asia? It seems like that's the only area of the world that operates under a different scale.
>>
>>109340357
In the cities, the population is dense enough that foreigner presence gets drowned out by the sheer volume of people.

Outside of the cities, you won't likely see other foreigners save at obvious tourist spots like Hakone.
>>
>>109340577
Do you look Asian? If you don't you won't fit in regardless so why bother.

Would you guys recommend travelling Japan all alone?

Would like to take a vacation for two or three weeks just riding trains through the country, stopping at random stations, visiting the local sights, eating local food and checking in at random hotels for the nights.
>>
>>109340893
It's like 6" of difference. I could see that being problematic.

I love these threads, thanks OP.

I have been wondering this for awhile. IMO you'd have to be prepared as fuck.

The first time I made that kind of stuff I must say it was a big impact for me. It wasn't even that far from my homeland.

I don't speak Japanese and imagine it would be pretty fun lost in translation.
>>

I once thought about doing that in Germany but then I gave up.

I've read in a guidebook (written by a Japanese) that sometimes sign language and saying "onegai shimasu" can be helpful.

Don't give up from your wildest dreams anon!
>>
>>109341238
I think it'd be alright. A friend of mine did just that back in high school armed with zero Japanese language ability and just a phrasebook.

Was pretty fun, according to him.
>>
>>109341281
Why did you gave up?

I'm from germany myself and the country is extremly high populated. You can't get lost in the woods or stuff like that. Worst thing that could happen is your train arriving 2 minutes too late.
>>
>>109341378
>Worst thing that could happen is your train arriving 2 minutes too late.
I assume there's an official investigation if something that grave happened.

Also, does everybody there speak english?

Most people under 30 understand it at least and quite a few speak it well.
>>
>>109341433

Hah, only if you're lucky. Everything in Germany is punctual EXCEPT for the trains. It's like a venting spot for laziness
>>

Daily reminder I have a life dream of taking a biketrip all the way from europe to asia and then US
Don't give up!

That's not a problem for me since I usually have to wait around 20 minutes for a fucking bus everyday in my city to go to college, bus drivers here a bunch of assholes. They get paid like shit though, so it's understandable.

They should grab some train simulator pros to get that shit up to speed.

I knew a guy who did that with his girlfriend.
Had dreadlocks all the way to his feet. He travelled from India all the way to Malaysia to my house, then when he was on the way to China he was involved in an accident and died. His girlfriend survived though. That was 10 years ago and I still have feels regarding it as he was a great guy

It's an idealized portrayal of real life with its major flaws removed unless they're related to the plot in some way (and therefore get resolved by the end).

How is Ikebukuro? The area that Durra is set at?
>>
>>109352848
Ikebukuro is pretty cool, it's less busy than Shinjuku and Shibuya but there's plenty going on.

I stayed in the suburbs near Ikebukuro where the streets are really narrow, it's very laid back and calm.

Thanks for sharing OP.

I always thought it was weird how closely anime follows IRL. I always assumed it'd be easier to make up a setting that's easier to draw, but I supposed BG artists are good enough that that doesn't matter.

I remember someone posting in a Free! thread a translation of the areas around Haru and Makoto's house, and how there was a third house that wasn't to be mistaken for Makoto's house. Maybe drawing from IRL directly means less mistakes like this will happen.
>>
>>109360280
"drawing from IRL directly" is called tracing
>>
>>109360441
I thought tracing was called tracing.
I meant taking photos and using them as reference, as opposed to studying photos and coming up with a new environment.

Guys... Guys what if... Guys what if they made VR glasses or even just a phone app that plays scenes/puts characters in the actual locations when you visit them?
For other anime as well.
Would be autistically cool.
