Can we have an LN thread?

What are you reading? Thoughts on LN's you've read?

I've read Yahari and HakoMari. Yahari was great and I'm waiting for the next volume. As for HakoMari, it started out amazing, but I didn't like the development from volume three and forward, feels like I'm in the minority there.

How is that compared to the main series? A lot of the series charm comes from Bell's stupidity and his constant unlucky encounters with strong enemies and situations. I just imagine the Loli team wouldn't have much trouble considering they're a team full of OP fucks.

>How is that compared to the main series?
Not as good as the main series is the general consensus, but still worth buying/interesting because you will miss out on too much stuff if you don't. Yen Press readers are kinda fucked if they don't license this series as well.

The main problem isn't that they are OP because there are always more OP monsters. The issue is that it is a parallel timed event, so in essence you got partially spoiled already. They say it's a side story, but everything's very closely related to the main story. In fact, people say there are more "main plot" than the main novel simply because Bell's too low level to "get into the main plot" still.

My ranking of the volumes 5 >>>> 3 >> side > 4 > 1 >>>> 2.
>>
>>108974115
I'm still reading volume 5 (Black Goliath fight just started), but it seems to be starting to actually get ready to reveal shit about the dungeon. Side story aside, I'd agree with your ranking, though.

I like Haimura's designs better all around, though. I'll probably get around to reading it at some point, I just won't prioritize it much considering like you said, I more or less know a lot of the results because of the main story.

Also, has it mentioned if anyone knows how many floors the dungeon is? I can't recall.

Gaiden 1 doesn't diverge much, but Gaiden 2 you might wanna pick up, and it explains a plot point that will not get explained in Volume 5.

As for Haimura's design, 2ch would agree with you. Every single volume people shit on Yasuda until volume 5 with the bath images; I like Yasuda. People joked that Yasuda reads 2ch so he went balls drawing to make volume 5 look good (he actually posed that on twitter too that he worked really hard on it this time).

Nobody knows how deep the dungeon is. Loki Familia's deepest with 59 as far as what's being reported to the Guild anyway; I wouldn't be surprised if Ottarl went deeper.

Enjoy the Goliath fight. Completely insane in the end. Ryuu and Asfi are so awesome. Just FYI, Gaiden 2 does have the Spartoi Udeus/Udaios fight, so that's another Monster Rex fight to look forward to (but Ais probably wrecked him easily).

The two gaidens cover up to volume 5 already? That means the author might want to slow down on how often they're released if he doesn't want to spoil shit in the main series with it. If he even cares to, since it's going to take Bell a few more volumes to catch up, especially if he keeps getting all S stats before leveling up.

And Yasuda isn't bad, I just like Haimura's style more. It's easier to see what's going on and have a more of an action feel to them. And Hiamura knows how to design a nice weapon and dwarf, gotta love it.

Can't imagine Ottarl or whoever got further. Going by his fight with Ais, he's a bit lower on the fighting strength, though I don't know much about the Freya familia's progress.

No it doesn't, [s]but Bell used something that Lily picked up but is actually from Ais in volume 2; it doesn't explain where the weapon is from in volume 5 itself.[/spoiler]

You might've confused volume 3's attacker with someone else. Ottarl hasn't fought Ais, and definitely could take down Ais since he's level 7.

Oh, I assumed the masked beastman leader calling her a monster was him, but I might have missed or misread something. I'll have to go back and check if it ends up bothering me enough.

I wouldn't be sure the difference between level 6 and 7 is that great, though. At that point it really depends how many stats they grinded before each level up, like Bell and his all S bullshit. Though Bell seems to have gotten a little bit stronger from possible hidden stat increases from just leveling up, so maybe it would.

Finish reading that Goliath fight and you will understand. The gap between levels are pretty much insurmountable unless you have some hax rare ability, and even then you would still lose in a 1v1 fight 100% of the time. In fact, the level gap only gets bigger as you level up.

>are almost fanfiction.net tier
They are, for the most part. A lot of the authors don't actually plan ahead and just do whatever comes to mind. Like how often there's a stat theme for characters, and it's stated it takes forever to grind stats etc, but the MC does it in an extremely short amount of time and everyone else starts to do the same. Basically devolving into DBZ power level shit.

Granted despite flaws like that, I do occasionally find a couple I enjoy for the characters more than the worldbuilding.

A lot of the translators don't know shit about English, like what a proper noun is or how to use em dashes. Granted a lot of native English speakers don't either. They also really, really want to "preserve" the Japanese flow of a sentence, which is retarded.

New bunko labels even start this shit to get sales. I'm telling you that one or two years from now, every single LN animated will be of Narou origin. You literally cannot name any new titles from new authors that have over 10k sales outside of Dengeki Bunko, and those ones from Dengeki Bunko only got sales cause they super heavy advertise them as their winning novels for the Dengeki Contest.

Actually, it kind of seemed like a self-insert story to me at first, but the author really started kicking the MC in the balls later on. It's only the "childhood arc" that's where life is the most rosy. Also, story does have a significantly more "mature" (as in plot development not PLOT and gore) as the volumes progress. I was honestly surprised by it.

tl;dr Went in expecting a masturbatory OP gary-stu, left pleasantly surprised.

BT is down so I can't check. I know I didn't get past what season 2 covered. Just sort of lost interest and put it down for later, and now the series is like 30+ books long, which is intimidating when I know the translations are frequently iffy and therefore more demanding to try to read.

>>108977356
>self-insert, masturbatory

I like the world-building aspect some of them do.

note: *some* of them. Others, I see them recommended fanatically somewhere, tentatively take a look, and hit the NOPE nuke from orbit button. Like I couldn't get past the prologue of, what was the name, something like Legendary Moonlight Sculptor or something, without saying "you've got to be fucking kidding me" fifteen times and then dropping it. Some of them, I don't even get past the promo blurb.

SAO and Mahouka, though /a/ rages and shitposts constantly, have stuff in the text (but not in the anime) that happen to entertain me (MMO mechanics and magical computer science nerdery). I don't care how much some people care about whether the authors do or do not imagine themselves as being the overpowered main characters.

I'd read more Hagure Yuusha Estetica if it was in readable form too, knowing full well that it's trashy, just to see the main character being a hilarious ass.

I guess basically, if it's entertaining and doesn't mash my personal ragebuttons, why would I *not* read it for free? Other people have different rage triggers and are entertained by different things.

Wasn't the light novel industry already flooded several years ago?

I remember someone once posted three collage images of every light novel published that month. And it was insane. Vast amounts of "slap a pretty girl's picture on the cover and a long title and hope it sells a few thousand copies" are play there. It's a very weird inward-facing industry, apparently.

Like imagine all if the English language trashy ebooks on Amazon and B&N were also getting small print runs. That's Japan right now. Except they started ages ago and skipped the ebook phase. The print a ton of stuff and see what sticks, then promote the top few.

Possibly someone will come in and say that that happened to manga, too, a decade earlier.

Stop cherrypicking.
He also

-Fails to save a newbie adventurer he could have easily saved because he (MC) was too greedy
-His brilliant plan of switching job requests and building up his traveling companion's reputation fails on him (Ironically, he wanted to actually find the "best solution/way to satisfy both sides" which backfired on him and caused him to lose all trust he built up for a couple of months)
-Beats up and bad-mouths his own father even though he (MC) was obviously in the wrong
-Has the girl who took his virginity and closest female to him leave after the first night
-Has erectile dysfunction for three years after that
-Fails to save his father

I can go on and on. Trust me, his life isn't that of a gary stu. Honestly, this is way darker than your generic LN and author puts legitimate challenges and hardships in his way. This reminds me more of a somewhat darker western fantasy story except with an eastern plot.

Also the author does world building quite well. He puts elements into play that only make sense several volumes later instead of the generic "insert chekov's gun into first chapter, fire it a couple chapters later".

I'm not sure exactly. He does multiple series, plus some other projects, so I'd have to dig to make a list. They outright have to make him slow down, because otherwise he writes faster than they can edit and sell Index.

> Kawahara
Well, only his Accel World and SAO Progressive books are "new" though. The main SAO line is still heavily revised versions of what he already wrote years and years ago. He's seriously still got like six books worth of that left to print.

I was expecting him to slow down a bit, but he's actually starting another series. I'm not sure if that's going to be at the expense of the publishing speed of one of the others.

Bell and his party getting completely fucked over by the dungeon (adventurers dumping mobs on him, monsters spawning out the ass, ceiling collapsing on them and pit falls), seeing a lot of girls naked and bathing with no consequence (nor should there be since half of them peeked at Bell's stats when he was KO'd, which is a dick move), more adventurer dickbaggery due to god assholerly, and a souped up Goliath dungeon boss.
>>
>>108985414
>It was leading up to that since volume 1 and his fast growth is one of if not the major element to the story. On the other hand, his Exp ability will only work until he catches up to Ais, then it goes from overpowered to wasted skill slot.

Is it though?
><Skill>

>[Single-Minded Pursuit]

>Accelerates Growth

>Effects last as long as his feelings are unchanged

> Effects are determined by the strength of his feelings

So if his feelings change to something like "I want to protect Ais" instead of "I want to catch up to Ais" then his growth can continue. Also, what was this about skill slots again?
>>
>>108985856
He gained 5 new teammates temporarily.
One is a level 1 supporter like Lily.
One is a level 2 tank who took a deathblow for Bell (they both survived barely) after his Argonaut fireball failed and he couldn't move due to exhaustion.
One is an OP level 4 DPS/tank that can cast spell while moving (even A is can't do this).
One is another level 4 DPS/tank that has a rare ability shared by less than 5 people, which gave the ability to fly and be invisible among other things.
One is a level 2 DPS that can do AOE prison that can chain even Monster Rex to the ground as long as her magic holds.

Not to mention Welf is the most OP of them all.
>>
>>108986256
If the feeling changes from "wanting to catch up to Ais" to "wanting to protect Ais", that's STILL a change. He just wants to be able to fight with Ais. I imagine the skill only works with the initial feeling otherwise the first effect would be pointless as only the second effect would make a difference.

Although it could just be Hestia's misunderstanding and he could actually "want to be a hero" and Ais is just part of it.

And I say wasted skill slot because you only get skills when you level up, right? If his skill from level 1 becomes unusable due to having achieved his goal, it's a wasted skill slot.

>>108986298
>Welf
That's what happens when you make overpowered weapons and can render the enemy's magic harmful to the enemy.

Anyone else read ELYSION? I found it pretty generic. Not bad for keeping entertained but nothing special.
>>
>>108986298
You got names for these brave and seemingly overpowered people?

And Lily might only technically be level 1. Hasn't her status not been updated for like over half a year or some shit? Considering just the shit she goes through with just Bell, she has to be down for level 2 by now.
>>
>>108986505
Skill slots are unlimited, magic is only limited to 3 except rare cases with elves. Both Lefiya and Liveria (especially, especially Liveria) are these cases.

Everyone wants to know what skills Ais have.
>>
>>108986684
>I found it pretty generic.
It actually sounded pretty generic so I left it alone on a 'will check out later' note. I'd rather read something potentially more interesting first.

Chigusa, Ouka, Ryuu, Asfi and Mikoto in that order.

Right, but it's one skill per level isn't it? Which means he'll eventually be down one for his level, which of course can be remedied by just leveling up again, but still.

Nah remember he got his Realize Freeze (I honestly don't know wtf that spells translate to) mid-level.

Picking LNs for the art seems kind of a waste. There's only a handful of illustrations after all.

Oh, that's right, shit. The spell's probably some sort of Greek like most of what everything else is. I'm personally way too fucking lazy to reverse-engineer what the author calls it. It is amusing how the author will use English when he can't figure out what the Greek would be, like will o' the wisp.

>>108986940
Different Anon, but I do tend to at least check out what scenes an author or illustrator chooses to highlight. This is from my habit of looking at all the illustrations before even reading the summary of a LN, though.
>>
>>108987023
Why don't you search by genre when it comes to LNs? Or just read the description. And leave pretty art for manga.
>>
>>108987117

LN descriptions are almost always ass. Doesn't help that for some reason Japan likes including character conversations or quotes in them. Just don't fucking understand why.

It's not bad, I suppose? It's not really noteworthy either, though. The characters are fun and fairly well-written, but as by the title, the MC literally wants to just travel around not doing shit and retire from being a hero and let the new guy take over.
Too bad the MC's fairly unlucky and still gets wrapped up in shit. Not that he can die, being immortal due to hero bullshittery. Being strong from the start also removes a lot of suspense as well, but there are plenty of strong enemies to make for a good fight.

Some interesting events do happen, like currently he's been turned into a shota and is exploring a dungeon to get back at a loli vampire for, well, making him a shota. His party for it consists of an angry elf, a shotacon nun, a tomboy fighter/ninja bestgirl, and 3 fairly dumb pirates.

One of my concerns though is that the new hero, whatshisface, is on the cover of volume 3 but in the web version nothing's mentioned of him since the ending of volume 2 in the web version. I assume that means he just keeping the new hero's side of the story in the published version only.

>>
>>108988031
>Does it have political intrigue as well
A little, but not so much it's made much difference. An archbishop makes the protagonist wanted by saying he's evil, but at best an incompetent assassin comes after him and ultimately nothing comes of it. There's also some side shit with some princesses but I can't even remember what the unimportant shit was.

???????? has plenty of fantasy political bullshit, though.

I see, that's another novel I have a read. Thanks again.

I finished Zaregoto volumes 4 and 5 and now I'm a little confused.

I get that Utsurigi killed a dude and impersonated him while dressing the corpse up to look like himself and leaving a message on the wall to tell Tomo not to spill the beans. He escaped without leaving any trace because he's a super hacker and shit. Then he let Ii come up with some bullshit theory to satisfy everyone. What I don't get is the part where apparently Mad Demon was somehow in on it from the start but was apparently so frightened of Utsurigi that he just played along with everything. What were the hints he was dropping? Was the entire thing just for the benefit of everyone who wasn't Utsurigi, the Professor, and Tomo?
